In February it will be two years since the official launch of TheatreBoard. From the very beginning one of our wishes has been to support good causes in the theatre sector. We’re really pleased to tell you that we have finally built up a modest reserve in our funds, allowing us to make what we hope will be the first of many donations. Whether you’re a member or a guest, a poster or a reader, every time you click on TheatreBoard you make us more attractive to advertisers. Ad revenue allows us to pay our hosting company and, if we’re lucky, generates income for our reserve. So please keep enjoying the forum and coming back, often! Now the fun part. We would like you to help us choose the two charities who will receive our first gifts of £100 each. You can nominate any charity anywhere in the UK, as long as they’re working in the theatre sector. We'd most like to support those which don't already get help from public funding, so although every suggestion will be considered we hope that our shortlist will mostly contain this type of organisation. We can't support individuals, such as students in training at the moment. We’ll do some research on each nomination (theatremonkey is in charge of this and will be keeping us right) then we’ll produce a short list and come back to you to choose the winners. mushroomtheatre.co.ukLee Mead is patron of this amazing place. Mushroom Theatre Company (MTC) is a fully inclusive dance and drama group based in Rayleigh Essex, offering a range of drama and dance classes for children and young adults. There are also a selection of adult classes.
As a fully inclusive theatre company, MTC integrates able bodied performers alongside disabled children, or those with special needs.

Denville Hall or Brinsworth House or any other home where actors retire to when they are unable to look after themselves.

the Union and Waterloo East Theatres in London. Thinking along those lines, wonder if one of the gifts could sponsor a seat somewhere? That might be too pricey though. |

Taking Flight Theatre an inclusive theatre (first of it's kind in Wales) who focus on working with physically disabled, sensory impaired and non disabled professional actors to create accessible theatre projects. They also provide training in both D/deaf awareness and inclusivity in theatre and beyond. I love Taking Flight for making accessibility part of the work not just an add on. BSL isn't a person stood at the side of the stage, it's an actor speaking in their own language as part of the production. Audio description isn't just for a few people with headsets, it's for everyone and part of the story. And while every theatre production can't be like that, it shows what can be done in terms of integrating accessibility, with a mind to it. They make outdoor theatre that's always incredibly fun- even in the Welsh 'Summer' months, and tour their annual Shakespeare to beautiful locations around the country. Their outreach work is also incredible. They make work for schools to counter discrimination (the award-winning Real Human Being) as well as working with other theatre companies to teach them how to be inclusive. (They've even trained Santa and his Elves some BSL this year!). Taking Flight don't get core funding, they don't have a building and this year lost their production grant from Arts Council Wales. It's two incredibly passionate women (and their team of volunteers) making sure the work still gets made- and most importantly that their artists still get a decent wage. It's a tiny company with a lot of heart. More importantly to this company every little really does make a difference- a £100 can buy some props, or pay for some actors to attend a workshop, or simply get the artistic director a train ticket to somewhere she needs to be for work and normally has to pay for herself.
