Sorry, but I don't "get it". She covered a notorious non-singer and I guess the audience were delighted to hear it sung - at what price who knows? Her voice is not good. Vibrato out of control and pitch incredibly irregular and it (latterly) is not a pleasant sound at all.....I am sure she is a nice woman but does not deserve the apparent praise lauded upon her. Had she not courted controversy over Close, who would YOU have cast in this tour which I gather is not doing well. Where are the proper singers these days? I can only rate Kerry Ellis (who needs to work on her Theatrical persona) and lady-in-waiting Rebecca Trehearn - who I pray will listen to reason.

Siobhan McCarthy as Norma.
I also didn't care for Ria's singing. Her acting was cartoonish and a disaster. Very surface. The final scene, she was a clown.

Ouch. I thought Ria makes a fantastic Norma and sings the score as it should be sung. The acting in the final scene was mesmerising too. I think she has developed so much as an actress since working with Close. I'm seeing Sunset for a second time later in the tour as I enjoyed Ria so much.

I also think Ria is brilliant and her Norma mesmerising. Everyone in my party shed a tear. She was spine-tinglingly good.
Someone up page mentioned the tour not doing well - I initiated getting tickets for this as it seemed no-one else in my 'theatre crowd' knew of it! Also there was no promotion in my city that I saw & I only knew it was on due to obligatory inclusion in theatre booklet. Can only think if low crowds it is due to this & is in absolutely no way reflective of production/performers. Standing O's when I was in especially for Miss Jones. It was exceptional (even Danny Mac who I assumed was stunt casting).

Ria Jones has been kicking around for years as an actress/singer...! I doubt she’d thank anyone for telling her how much she’s developed since “working with” Close. She didn’t actually. She stepped in for her when she was indisposed. If you read the press articles reporting events at the time, she hadn’t even performed with the orchestra before she stepped onto the stage!

I know Ria has been around for years - I've seen her in many shows! She always gives a great performance - my point was that her Norma is even better than I was expecting based on past performances and I know she has referred to how much she learnt from her experience with Sunset last year and watching Close work. Apologies if this wasn't clear in original post.

Gosh did you really need to make a whole new thread just to be exceptionally rude about a singer? Not a particularly pleasant thing to do. Each to their own of course, but that doesn't excuse unnecessary vitriol.
Anyway, I haven't seen the current tour, but I saw Ria cover for Ms Close at the Coliseum and thought she was really rather good.

I'm hoping to see it this week in Birmingham. I've seen Ria in a number of shows over the years and must admit I'm a bit of a fan. But until I've seen her as Norma, I'll rightly reserve judgement about her in that role.
