I'm a big fan of plot twists in general. Loved the big plot twist in the latest season of Sherlock, loved the one if Fight Club etc. I was just wondering do any of you know of great plot twists in musicals? The only one I can think of is Wicked.

In Jesus Christ Superstar Judas betrays Jesus, commits suicide and then... ends up in Heaven with the angels! That was all your fault, Caiaphas!

Mea culpa! Which remninds me of another one... Sweeney Todd. We all know that the beggar woman is his wife but he doesn't... and then he kills her! And then there's Ben's Big One in Love Never Dies. Christine has a son, and he turns out to be... (***drum roll***)... the Phantom's son! Well we didn't see that one coming!

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels comes to mind, a twist so big they actually have a track on the cast album with John Lithgow warning not to listen any further if you haven't seen the show:
{Spoiler - click to view} Catherine is The Jackal, and she's been conning Lawrence and Freddy the entire time

The entire premise of Our House hinges on a plot twist and then decides to run both ways with it.
Jerry Springer hinges on Jerry being shot, which takes the second half into very different territory from the first half.
The Women in White, well she has a secret, a terrible secret, a secret, a terrible secret, a secret that she must tell, a terrible secret, a secret - that everyone can guess anyway.

Well, I think they'd be slightly ridiculous in a thread named "Musical Plot Twists" - what else would you expect in such a thread?

Well, I think they'd be slightly ridiculous in a thread named "Musical Plot Twists" - what else would you expect in such a thread? Lists of musicals with brilliant plot twists, without revealing the plot maybe...

Don't think just mentioning the show's name without the actual plot twist makes much sense

Don't think just mentioning the show's name without the actual plot twist makes much sense “Sunset Boulevard when you find out who Max really is” Not difficult! However if no one else cares then neither do I, so spoil away!

Why don’t you change the title of the thread if it upsets you that much?
(Though I’d have thought that anyone who was sensitive about having plots spoilt wouldn’t be looking through the thread in the first place!)

In 1999, I remember a casual acquaintance asking me if I'd seen a newly released horror movie yet, as she knew I was keen on spooky stuff. I told her I hadn't but was looking forward to going that evening. "Oh, I won't tell you what happens," she replied, "but there's a REALLY BIG TWIST." Now, I'm kind of an idiot, happy to take things at face value and constantly being surprised by the various directions a plot will take, but with those words ringing in my ears, I worked out the big twist in the first two minutes of the film and spent the rest of the running time looking for evidence rather than just enjoying the film. TL;DR - even knowing there's a twist in a film/show is a spoiler in itself. Surely it would be far more reasonable to add "caution: many spoilers" to the subject than to hope to be able to leave this thread unspoiled.
