Went to Northampton to see an all black cast version of Pinter's the Caretaker last night. (A Royal and Derngate co production with Bristol Old Vic).
A good take, I enjoyed a version of a play that I really like. Patrice Naiambana's Mac Davies was very good, well supported by the other members of the cast. The set was very good, vertical on the fairly small Royal stage at Northampton.
Thought it an educated Northampton audience, not one snigger at an all black cast and Mac's constant black references. 'Poles, Greeks, Blacks'. But it was a confused audience rather than educated I think. On two occasions in the break I overheard audience members ask why he kept on going on about the blacks when he was black. Anyway, made me smile.
