Just make the flipping announcement! Dont see why we always have to wait til half term every year. Paint your Wagon is being done in Liverpool. Minerva musical is the one he takes risks on. Passion would be my wish, then go for a crowd pleaser in the mainhouse, Camelot or Man of la Mancha still top of my list there.

The rights to musicals are an issue at Chichester. I think a lot of the musicals they would love to do simply are not available to the theatre especially if they hope for a West End transfer. So West Side Story simply would not be available or Cabaret for example as Bill Kenwright has the rights for the latter. So... I suspect the list of commercial available musicals is a bit thin.

I'd discount Camelot as an option for now to be honest. When chatting with the lovely Mr Evans after the post-'Quiz' quiz, he said that the book of Camelot would need a lot of work before it would be good enough for a new staging. In fact, he was quite surprised that a lot of the shows we were suggesting for revival were so old, which makes me think that his inclination is towards more recent musicals. Which explains Caroline, or Change, of course.

I don't think Camelot's that much of a crowd-pleaser anyway. I love the score and the film, but even putting aside the issues with the book, when's the last time there was a major production in the UK? I'm sure there must have been one since 1982, but at the same time I wouldn't be at all surprised if there hadn't been.

I'd love to see revivals of Grand Hotel and Me and My Girl Oh I forgot about Me and My Girl, which would be playing it ultra safe, this one would guaranteed to be box office gold - given the demographic of the Chichester audience, would have a fantastic chance of a West End transfer.
I could see Chichester going for this one and me the first in the queue for a ticket.
I haven't seen this show.

I saw "Me and My Girl" in the 80s and loved it. It was supposed to star Karl Howman but he was ill and the understudy went on instead. The additional dialogue by Stephen Fry is witty and it is a fun, if undemanding, evening.
If you wish to see "Grand Hotel", they are doing it this year at the Shaw Theatre, Niagara-on-the-Lake (The Shaw is also doing three plays by Stephen Fry) but Canada is quite a long way to go.

No, they can't revive 'Me & My Girl' until Charlie Stemp is ready. It's like the perfect marriage of show and star.

^ As were his very successful Show Boat and My Fair Lady at Sheffield. The ink was barely dry!

My Fair Lady was superb in Sheffield. It was my first time at that venue and loved it.

Maybe he felt Sheffield was the right place for big classic revivals but Chichester has already had plenty so a new direction would be nice. Fiddler and Caroline were rather ghetto for them really.

I saw My Fair Lady and thought it was excellent, it could’ve got a West End run, but it was done at the wrong time and no suitable theatre was available. Show Boat got excellent reviews, I found it very good, but ultimately didn’t find its market. Also when a producing house looks for a show many factors are taken into account, obviously top of this would be availabity, then cost to produce, impact on the producing house box office and the shows legacy, where the artistic will listen to producers and theatre owners, what they likely to option if done well. I would stick my neck out here and say that Chichester knows what musicals it wants to do next year and would have started on the first rung of the ladder of producing it and they would have a good idea for the following year also.

I would be very surprised if they werent forward planning in the way you suggest, seems obvious. After all they tend to only do one mainhouse musical each year. The Minerva has given them that less risky venue to put on shows that otherwise wouldnt get done at all.

We got very few leaks last year and this year looks the same. I guess we will just have to wait. No idea even what the "big" musical is in the main house!
