Seeing the show three times next week. It'd be a lie if I said I wasn't excited There were people standing after Friend Like Me and deserved, the energy is amazing I genuinely don't know how he does that 8 times a week he puts so much into it! I saw the second preview on Broadway and Friend Like Me also got a standing ovation.

On press night there was a pretty much instant and full standing ovation for Friend like me. I've never seen anything like that before in act 1

Dean John-Wilson was a good Aladdin and we had Lauren Chia as Jasmine (u/s), both were fine but just didn't stand out enough against the Genie. crying out loud!! Lauren hasn't debuted as Jasmine yet... She was in the ensemble today?

Waiting for a show (not Aladdin) to start the other day, there was a guy complaining about Aladdin that not enough money had been spent on it (Disney after all). In particular, he complained that the opportunity had not be taken to turn the auditorium into Aladdin's cave for the audience to sit it!
That got me thinking. I think Miss Saigon went amiss by not transforming the entire auditorium into a Saigon brothel. FOH: "please leave that condom alone, Madam, it's part of the decoration".

Do these people realise it's theatre and not a theme park ride. I imagine they wouldn't be able to transform the auditorium due to the listed status.

I kind of agree. Although im sure it wasnt cheap, as much as i loved it (and i did), it didnt look like as much money had been spent when compared to beauty and the beast or lion king. The sets looked a bit minimal and cheap. Costumes were great tho (except jafars)

Westend Understudies tweeted she was on today and in her profile it said u/s Jasmine so I just assumed - oops!

How do they ensure jasmine and prince Ali stay safe on the carpet and don't fall?

How do they ensure jasmine and prince Ali stay safe on the carpet and don't fall? I wanna say a little bit of Disney magic...?

How do they ensure jasmine and prince Ali stay safe on the carpet and don't fall? The same way they deal with everything else that shouldn't move. Gaffer tape.

How do they ensure jasmine and prince Ali stay safe on the carpet and don't fall? Well far be it from me to state the flippin' obvious but isn't it a magic carpet? A carpet that's, like, magic and all that . . .

No, not misunderstanding at all. I never said they were cheap but that they looked cheap. And i include all the sets in that. Even the cave is quite minimal, albeit very gold.

The sets looked a bit minimal and cheap I think you miss the point, joe10086. The "village" and "desert" scenes are meant to be minimal, to contrast with the gloriously opulent scenes in the cave and sky. The contrast between "have" and "have not" is vital to the show, as is the dramatic need to have a couple of "take your breath away" moments. Trust me on this, I've got the press pack, and according to those figures, NOTHING is cheap about this show LOL. I'm with Joe on this. I thought the marketplace in particular felt cheap. I get that it's minimal, to provide a contrast, and that does work - it shouldn't look cardboard, however. I'd compare it with Kim's shack in Miss Saigon, on this same stage immediately beforehand. She was clearly very poor, living in minimal surroundings, but it looked real. The Aladdin marketplace doesn't.

In the revival, it wasn't. Chris is getting bugged by people trying to sell him things, buy a passport, the guy cycling round...

I wouldn't really expect a show set in a fictional city, with a genie and a flying carpet, to look "real"

Slighty taken aback by the 3 one second costume changes! Haha Also, there is only 12 songs in the show?

Think it is great that you have shows, that don't rely on projections.
Even the Aabian city has to be minimalist, mwhere is only certain room in the wings, you can store stuff.

Saw this last night and, while I enjoyed much of it, at the end I was left feeling a little underwhelmed - I loved the sets, the costumes and Aladdin's three friends, mostly loved the genie and the big production numbers, thought the magic carpet was technically very well done though not as impressive as I'd hoped... {Spoiler - click to view} (wafting back and forth across the stage rather than venturing out over the audience) and adored the twinkly night sky backdrop. However, though Dean John-Wilson certainly looks the part, I found his vocals disappointingly weak throughout, and the show tipped over into pantomime rather too often for my liking (don't get me wrong - I love panto, but only when I actually go to a panto!). So... definitely worth seeing, but not one I'll rush back to see again.
