Just been reading in my morning paper that from October 6th ( till march next year ) the National Theatre will be hosting an exhibition of it's posters throughtout the years, sounds good to me. If a mod can correct my typo in the name of the thread I'll be grateful !!!

I don't know I quite like the idea of a Mational theatre.
But yes, I'm a total nerd for theatre posters in general but I love the sometimes weird style evolution over the years the NT has had! I hope they put some of the ones from the exhibition on sale as prints as well.

Thanks for flagging this up. I have a real interest in theatre graphic design. I love looking at theatre posters but dislike the modern trend of leaving off cast and crew info- the National ones in particular but some West End ones too.

I'm looking forward to this - it seems to be a neglected art these days. I used to collect posters and flyers from the RSC and Royal Exchange etc. when I was a teenager (amazing work by Ralph Steadman, Ian Pollock etc.), but I rarely see a striking contemporary one - Locker Room Talk and An Octoroon were good, but that's about it from this year. I think it largely died when Photoshop came in - now it's just the stars' faces and some lettering.
Btw, there is an interesting trend with film posters - artists/designers making their own prints and selling them - so the talent is still out there, but it's not being harnessed by either film studios or theatres who evidently prefer the 'safer' route of a celebrity photo.

I hope they put some of the ones from the exhibition on sale as prints as well. I thought the NT had a system that prints off archive posters for sale on demand? Unless they shut it due to lack of, er, demand? I too thought it used to be an 'anything we have saved' type operation but it seems now to be an 'a selection of the archive' unless I'm missing something? I looked earlier in the summer to see if I could get an old Angels one but didn't seem to be able to (I have a teeny postcard I contend myself with)

Guessing they could only print the ones they have copyright clearance for? I assume so, though I swear there used to be a search database type thingy on there. Anyway I might buy a 'One Man...' one to remind me of mistakes past.

I attended a fascinating talk in the Cottesloe/Dorfman part of the National Theatre a few years ago, that was about the history of NT posters. The talk was good, the visuals were a delight.
Walking up and down the stairs at London's fringe theatre venues that often decorate the walls with posters and photos of classic productions, and fresh-faced young versions of what have become the starry names of theatre, one omission I have noticed on so many posters is the year of the production. That might mean nothing at the time, and something like '22 March to 14 May' may have done the trick in attracting playgoers, but I believe no reference to the year diminishes the poster's retrospective power.

Totally agree with the above. It baffles me when the year of the production doesn't feature on the poster. Ditto with the cast list as I mentioned earlier. It's always much more interesting when you come across an old poster years down the line and are reminded who was in the show.

I don't think they're on the site anymore now.

Personally I'm hoping they have a print of the poster for The Relapse with Alex Jennings, probably my all time favourite NT production.
