I live a couple of miles away and have not seen hide or hair of carnival. Granted I didn't go on any of the tube lines that go through the area, but surely that shows how contained and easy to avoid it is? Funny how events where white people get blind drunk and violent are never subject to this kind of condemnation and debate. Only last week I read a big tabloid piece about white British holidaymakers in Spain being blind drunk and violent, it is a common story at this time of year. Also your implication that it is only non-white people who get blind drunk and violent at Notting Hill carnival is very peculiar. I live a couple of miles away too actually, streets packed with carnival people and roads blocked due to carnival closures.

Plenty of examples to disprove it too as has already been picked up. Others would include such places as Ascot, any major UK city on a freshers night. Seems just as blinkered to suggest people who are anti Notting Hill carnival are racist.

metro.co.uk/2017/08/29/police-reveal-final-number-of-arrests-during-notting-hill-carnival-6885595/As a positive at least arrests are down. The nature of many of them concerns me more than the number based on overall attendance and percentages. I admit having attended the event a couple of times I am neither pro or anti. I enjoyed the event itself and love the chance for people to come together and celebrate. I certainly found as the evening wore on it took on a slightly menacing undertone took over but it could be avoided if you wanted to avoid it.

And like I have already said, I live further away than that and have encountered plenty. And your last sentence is just bizarre, entirely factually inaccurate and frankly racist. Not once did I link my complaints about the behaviour of people at Carnival to their race. In fact, the hideously drunk and high people I encountered coming back from Carnival at the weekend and drinking on the tube at 10am heading there were a mixture of white and ethnic minorities, predominantly the former. What is good about Carnival is its celebration of cultures, and if it was solely about that then it would be fabulous. It is what the behaviour of some of the attendees of many different colours and creeds turn it into that is the problem.

There are an awful lot of dog whistling "how much can I rant about black people and PC police and post coded anti-black statements" comments around (in general, not specifically here) from people who believe anything short of explicitly stating "I hate black people" is not racist. Systemic and covert racism is real.

Systemic and covert racism is real. Where exactly ? Can you give a single example from this "awful lot" ? I was on a tube filled with carnival goers around midday More than half were white, amongst the rest by far the biggest group, as you would expect, were West Indian. No obvious muslims at all, no Somalis for example who are numerous where I live, no Indians. I merely mention this unscientific observation out of interest, I'm not sure how "inclusive" this event really is.

Systemic and covert racism is real. Indeed it is. Just like your little 'covert' dig earlier about events involving white people getting drunk and violent not getting the same bad press. A comment youre conveniently swerving the valid responses to now. Works both ways you know!
