So the Curve season launch is happening as we speak.
They just teased they are developing a new musical adaptation of a 80's film with the original writers for Spring next year and then on pops Lucie Jones to sing a rendition of The Power Of Love by Huey Lewis and the News as a 'teaser' for it, which is of course from...Back To The Future.
Not confirmed but think it's pretty obvious that Curve are developing a Back To The Future musical for next year.

Was Jamie Lloyd not working on this a few years back? Interesting to see if it actually happens this time!

Was Jamie Lloyd not working on this a few years back? Interesting to see if it actually happens this time! Seems it is. There seems to be a date on it in terms of it coming Spring next year and i think it's probably not something that would be teased without coming to fruition at such a venue like you see all the time with the West End. I can't imagine really this will have the money at Curve that it was set for in the West End so it will be interesting.

I will pay for tickets and travel to/accommodation in Leicester just to hear the Back to the Future theme being played by a live orchestra. I'm in!

It would be awesome if it is BTTF and I'd definately make the trip to Leicester. I wonder if tickets will go like hot cakes once they're on sale or will it be like Groundhog Day at the Old Vic last year where it only sold out after word of mouth, considering they're both classic films (probably BTTF more so than GhD). After Lloyd left the project I even thought I could imagine Matthew Warchus taking over, it sounds like the type of musical he'd do.

If Warchus was doing it, it would surely be developing at The Old Vic. I would assume that it's Nikolai Foster directing it given he's the AD at Curve. Though the last one they developed was Adrian Mole which did/does have an independent director, so maybe not.

One of a long list of 80's films that everyone of my generation saw. Except me

I think the difference between BTTF and GhD is that the former has much more of a cult following. I know a few people devout BTTF fans, not necessarily theatre fans, who would jump on tickets for a musical straight away sheerly because it forms part of the brand.

I know a few people devout BTTF fans, not necessarily theatre fans, who would jump on tickets for a musical straight away sheerly because it forms part of the brand. ...or shy away from it just because of that. Spiderman is a huge brand, which didn't stop the musical from flopping and when I mentioned its existance to people who don't care for musical theatre, their reaction was mostly along the lines of "FFS, is nothing sacred?!" Rocky is also a movie franchise with huge name recognition and flopped as a musical. GhD was overall lesser known and on the whole not difficult to stage really, it all takes place in a few indoor locations and the square. But when I think of BTTF, the image that springs to mind most of all is the actual "time leap" in the DeLorean, the races across the streets and on the parking of the mall, the moment when the lighting strikes, etc. - in short, stuff where I just don't see how they can convincingly recreate that on stage. I have fond memories of BTTF because it came out when I was an impressionable 13 year old with a big crush on Michael J. Fox. Though I haven't seen it in ages. I'd be open minded to see this and maybe even trudge to Leicester for it but I don't think there will be a huge rush for tickets.

Starting the inevitable then. Dream casting? Apart from Cynthia Erivo.

So, wait. Is this part of the Curve's upcoming season? No online search indicates as much.
The Curve is a great venue and I've seen some fine productions there, but it seems to be a graveyard for big budget musicals that hope to transfer.

It could be a Huey Lewis jukebox musical. Admittedly, it would be just a one act production, but you never know!

No this is something they simply teased they are working on and is coming next spring. They didn't even confirm that it was BTTF just they are workshopping a new musical at the moment with the writers of the original 80's film. It's just obviously BTTF from the teaser song choice and other clues. I don't agree about it being a graveyard. The reason that Water Babies and the original Finding Neverland didn't transfer was because they weren't good enough. Nothing to do with the venue. Adrian Mole has had a further life and by their comments last night us probably heading to the West End after Menier.

As a clue to what musical they are developing from an 80's film they have a performance of a song that appeared in an 80's film and it's NOT that film? I see.
I guess I better change the title of the thread!

I's probably say this is related? They seem to be hosting an invited showcase/workshop of a new musical in association with Jamie Wilson Productions tonight.

Oh no, not another movie to musical adaptation... Why can't theatre writers come up with something original?

Musicals are SO FREQUENTLY based on other properties that I really don't see why it's worth getting salty about it, especially as Broadway musicals based on movies date back as far as 1958's Oh Captain!. (Also is it even confirmed what this one is? All I see so far is a lot of speculation. Still might be original! )
