Isn't this the only moment of vocal 'excitement' in the show or are there some soaring ballads too? Its got another couple of decent big numbers. The problem is the book with its good old, 1905, keep to your own, music hall philosophy,- not surprising as the original novel was written in 1905. That leads to the lead who personifies what you would imagine from the books title - Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul. He also looks modelled on George Formby for the musical - which isn't necessarily a good thing, unless you play him like Tommy Steele

Find it extraordinary this hasn't announced it's transfer yet! I've heard there's a team of scientists researching night and day to devise a system of time travel so this show can be transferred back in time to the West End of the 1950s where it may be viewed as revolutionary.

Find it extraordinary this hasn't announced it's transfer yet! Can it please, so I don't have to do the journey to Chichester and back, I think that's the only reason I've not seen it yet.

To be honest, I don't considering the previous musicals at Chichester have usually waited until just after the end of the Chichester run to announce a transfer i.e. Singin In The Rain, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy, the Barnum UK Tour, with some such as Pyjama Game and Guys and Dolls being delayed for a year! If Half a Sixpence will have a life after Chichester, it too will probably be announced after the run in September or some point this Autumn, no sooner.

I must have been dreaming but I thought the transfer had already been announced to the Noel Coward Theatre for the Autumn?

I think you'll find that was brought up in the "rumour" thread which very quickly became the (wild) "speculation" thread. It has now been confirmed that these "rumours" (which many of us took to have some degree of substance to them) are only what people think/would like (no foundation whatsoever) so separate threads have been created. That's not to say it won't go in there at some point. But it all gets very confusing these days...

Mark Shenton tweeted a few weeks ago saying that this is going to the Noel Coward in September so it is more a rumour than a wild speculation actually. Just nothing has been officially confirmed yet. This is why people think it is going to the NC in September hence why we are surprised nothing has been confirmed yet...

But Mark Shenton's tweets don't have the same status as Baz's actually. And most people who've seen it report it's offensively outdated actually. This is why people think it is going nowhere in September hence why we are surprised some people say they liked it...

Baz did tweet someone and say Sixpence is coming to London, but didn't mention a theatre.

I would go and see this in Chichester, but for a round trip journey longer than the performance,a total 7 hours on the train, really puts me off.

Surely it's a dead cert it's going to transfer? They only just set up a YouTube channel and added a trailer. Would they really have bothered if it was just two weeks left with no plans after?

Yes, too much time and money has been lavished on this to just have the run at Chichester. A transfer must always have been planned. But as I said at the time of the "rumour"/announcement - I do think it will stuggle in town. It is no Gypsy or Guys & Dolls.

Most musicals I've seen this year have, like this, been slow to grow on me, but by the second half I was hooked, then really impressed. I've never known so much cheering & ovating at CFT before - and what tremendous value for £15, too! Btw, that price hasn't risen for several years, either, whereas I can't think of any other theatre of which I can say the same.

I’ve seen two in the space of six days. Replacements that is. The first was Tyrone Huntley last Tuesday, his vocals soaring into the open skies of Regent’s Park, as Judas. And then Charlie Stemp last night as Arthur Kipps, in Chichester’s summer offering. Both superstars in the making…
Tyrone Huntley was originally playing Annas in Jesus Christ Superstar, so the story goes, and I won’t ask mrmusicals to dish the dirt a fourth time, as I’d like him to stick with his three denials. More in keeping… But it was fairly evident, from critics and audience alike, that here was a replacement we were all 100% happy with. I can’t imagine anyone else filling his shoes in this incarnation.
And so was the case in Half A Sixpence last night with the multi-talented, incredibly engaging young Charlie Stemp. Bryan Dick’s name still sits in this season’s brochures dotted around Chichester’s Festival Theatre lobby (he departed before rehearsals started for Hobson’s Choice, I believe) but it is Charlie Stemp’s name many of us will be looking out for in years to come. What an outstanding performer! He has the most wonderful, light-up-the-stage smile, a charm and appeal about as far away from arrogant as you can get, and with energy that just keeps coming in bucket loads. Every move is a pleasure to watch, bringing sheer joy and versatility to a wonderful company whose team efforts were right behind him every step of the way. With only a few previous appearances in touring productions of Wicked and Mamma Mia to his name, long may he continue to tread the boards…
The musical itself is everything we now expect from Chichester productions: they look good, they sound good, they are good. Yes, some of the songs are a bit weaker than we’re usually treated to, despite the efforts of Stiles and Drewe to inject a bit more oomph into the show, but it’s a pleasant enough story (easily competing with some of the shows that have found recent success in the Big Smoke- Funny Girl and Sweet Charity come to mind) and this one packs us all off into the night with a spring in our step and an extra beat in our heart. It can’t all be beggars, tortured souls and crucifixions, can it?
On the subject of replacements, there’s quite a history of them turning the fortunes of a show, isn’t there? I’m thinking Elaine Paige, called in last minute to replace our Judi. Memory might have been only a distant memory… And what about Roger Moore, let go because… well, he just couldn’t sing his part in Aspects, could he? Enter Kevin Colson. And Dana Gillespie, I am told, replaced the originally cast Mary in London’s first production of Superstar.
A nice little story for a musical too: “Christine Daae can sing it, sir!” suggests Meg in Phantom. "A chorus girl?” (I only ever hear John Savident’s voice for this!)
And then there’s 42nd Street, which’ll be tapping its way into Drury Lane next year.
Bring on the replacements, I say!

/\ I haven't seen 'Half A Sixpence' yet (desperately hoping for a transfer) but read the reviews etc and I can't imagine for the life of me why Bryan Dick (fnar fnar) chose 'Hobson's Choice' instead.

It's my understanding that the choice was not Dick's own. I suspect that Dick was contractually bound to remain in Hobson's Choice after the UK tour if it transferred to London thereby preventing him from doing Half a Sixpence in Chichester.
