I'm currently nursing a rather large collection of Theatre Tokens (mostly from my weakness for their 10% bonus offers)- and am wondering what happens when one tries to purchase a ticket costing, for example £27.50 with £30 worth of tokens. The FAQ states that change will be given in Theatre Tokens - but I wasn't aware that denominations this small existed, and in any case, some theatres must not keep them in stock or run out. Does anyone know if a theatre would let one purchase a gift voucher with the remaining value (eg. a Delfont Mackintosh or National Theatre gift voucher for £2.50)? On another, although related note, do theatres allow the purchase of gift vouchers with Theatre Tokens outright (ie. a £20 Theatre Token for a £20 National Theatre voucher)? - I'm hoping to pounce on Network at the National when sales open, and Theatre Tokens can't be used online. Many thanks for any help; as you can see from my post count, I'm rather new here.

Re change it can depend on the theatre as I've had it in coins but also tokens - the tokens do go down to £1 ones and I've had one of those for goodness knows how long!

Welcome, acidqueen. www.theatretokens.com/faq has the answer: change is given in cash up to £1, tokens for the rest. You'd need to check with the National about using theatre tokens to buy other tokens. My guess is not, though, as tokens are exchangeable for tickets. Oooh, the theatremonkey themself (himself, herself, monkeyself?)... Goodness. Your site is an amazing resource! Anyway, I'd read that FAQ but had an inkling that theatres wouldn't want to give cash change and wanted some confirmation. On Saturday I visited Wyndham's and the National and as I thought, neither could give cash change. The staff member at Wyndham's said they couldn't give change at all (not even in tokens), and the lovely Box Office Manager (who intervened of her own accord) said that she'd worked on the West End for over 10 years and had never given cash as change! The National were very confused by the whole change from tokens concept (although they could give tokens as change, down to £1 as clair said) and had to sort it out on the till while I saw Common. They were unable to change a £10 token for two £5 ones, they couldn't sell an NT gift voucher for the remainder (as you guessed) and they couldn't take 50p cash to make the change a round multiple of £1. I ended up having to make a 50p donation, which I don't resent, but would rather SOLT have their website reflect the reality, rather than their fantasy!

I occasionally receive theatre tokens as gifts and have always rounded down tokens and paid any balance over the value of the tokens in cash myself.
So this thread has been an eye-opener for me!

Currently sat at my Box Office desk having just sold some of these! I'm never sure on the rules on change, and I'd skimmed this before the customer came in and they asked me, and thanks to you I had an answer! See, who said this board isn't educational!

I was recently reading that paper theatre vouchers will soon be a thing of the past, though old ones will continue to be valid, so no need to panic.
They will be replaced by the type of pre-payment cards you get in shops, and e-vouchers.
Presumably, in both cases, change will no longer be an issue.

I used some theatre tokens to pay for a ticket this morning and my change was loaded onto a card. I registered the card on their website but I'm unable to find information about receiving more tokens in the future. My mum's standard Christmas present is to give me theatre tokens. Does anyone know how the E-Gift works? I just don't want to have to end up with multiple plastic cards, it's a waste of plastic and stupid. Say I get an E-Gift can I load that onto the card that I have? Anyone know?
