Please pm I am dying to go Sorry I don't have it - it was on website but got bought seconds after my last post. I couldn't make that date so didn't buy it. Keep checking website as occasional cheap tickets have been coming up but you have to be very quick. Or try the Friday rush. Good luck!

I managed to get a standing ticket by keeping the website on favourites and keeping it refreshed. I'm seeing it twice in the same week...one for Kaufman, and the other for Kunde. I know already who will be better

So far he seems in rude health...

It's a very challenging role to be accepting, especially as you say as Jonas has been in a shaky condition. This could go either way in my opinion...I just hope the production is more compelling than the last one!

We'll I've just seen the final Dress Rehearsal (preview performance in all but name) and it was pretty damn good.
Production/design My heart sank at the start as it's that old cliche the black box. However, it's a very clever box which opens out really ingeniously to produce many varied and often atmospheric spaces. It's a modern looking space but the (very handsome) costumes are broadly 'period'. Jonas wears a number of very fetching jerkins - he really is a handsome bugger. At the end, in the bedroom scene, the concept seems to have been junked somewhat; it appears to be set in a modern, boutique hotel and while Jonas's dressing gown is a bit Harry Potter, Emilia looks a bit Blackadder. Warner is not one of my favourite directors but he plays it fairly straight, with just a few telling, but original touches.
Performers
Marco Vratogna (Iago) He was impressive but I feel it needs a darker voice to portray the evil of the part. He is a convincing actor.
Maria Agresta (Desdemona) To begin with I thought she was going to be disappointing, she has quite a pronounced vibrato and I think a more pure sound suits the part better - Margaret Price and Kiri Te Kanawa were both superb in the role in previous productions. But the big test is Act 4 and she really delivered in the Willow Song/Ave Maria - very moving.
Jonas Kaufmann (Otello) His first entrance in Act one, where he should knock you to the back of your seat, was underwhelming but after that he just got better and better and by the end was absolutely thrilling. This is such a difficult role. In the recent past only Domingo in his prime could really pull it off live. Kaufmann is nearly as good and, by a mile, as good as it gets today. The part needs huge stamina, vocal heft but also exquisite delicacy too; Jonas gave us some ravishing pianissimo singing. He's a really good actor too.
Antonio Pappano (Conductor) Outstanding as ever. He's particularly good in the Italian repertoire and the orchestra played magnificently for him. ROH are so lucky to have him and I read that he doesn't think he'll extend his contract beyond 2020. That's a huge shame but understandable (he's been there ages.) I don't think there's a better opera conductor in the world today.
Well I'm going again in about 2 weeks. I'm sure it will only get better in that time.

On another note I would've loved if ROH had kept Kaufmann on for Turandot
I know he performs Nessun Dorma quite a lot. Wonder why he hasn't taken on the full opera before

Wonder why he hasn't taken on the full opera before Yes that's about the only Puccini opera he doesn't do. I expect he will now do more of the heavier Wagnerian repertoire like Domingo did at his age.

Hope to write more at the weekend. But...
JK, just a little underpowered (I was in Row K of the Balcony)? A modern Otello, certainly not a 'great man' falling from heights. But hard to sympathise with.
For the Drama we needed a threatening Iago, not really dark enough.
(Its possible that the two we more closely matched in this production and that was the drama, but if so such subtleties didn' project upto the heated heights where I was.)
A good production that went off the rails with grafitti, a broken lion and a modern hotel room. Presumably the later to remind the audience that this Opera is still relvant today (Ho Hum).
It was good, but not what it might have been and not what the interval darlings were bleating about.

Hilarious review on artsdesk. Ismene Brown attempts a serious review but three times mentions how gorgeous Jonas is and virtually has an orgasm commenting on his 'long graceful legs.' The woman is totally smitten.
