And if it is true the theatre owners are LOSERS. Why put in ANOTHER musical adaptation of a film no one saw and no one remembers fondly? Strictly Come Dancing took it's title from Strictly Ballroom. So I think there will be an audience for this. Support new writing mrslovettsmeatpie and be thankful, if the rumour's true, that the theatre owners aren't bringing in a cheap and tacky tour!

Do you not think it's healthier for the West End to have new writing coming into the West End? It saddens me Daniel that you are happy for a production that ran 20 or so years to return to London. Just because a show has film origins it doesn't mean to say it's destined for failure. If Strictly Ballroom does come into London then I think it will do well considering Strictly Come Dancing took it's title from Baz's film and there is a huge appetite for Ballroom and also feel good shows in our Brexit/Trump uncertain world. Its not that I'm happy to see an old show come back, its that I'm happy to see a show return which can keep a theatre and actors working rather than have several shows fail consecutively at the same venue, therefore causing disruption to the work of actors, backstage and front of house staff. Not just Blood Brothers then, but maybe the best way to go forward for the time being would be a revival or bringing something back until something more guaranteed success can come in. Maybe Strictly Ballroom is that show, I don't know, I've never seen it or the movie. But I'd hate to see yet another movie to musical fail there. Theatre is all about taking risks....always has been, always will.

The Piccadilly had a run of flops back in the late 80s...sometimes things go that way, that's theatre and no one has a crystal ball that can predict success or failure. Back in 1985 Cameron took a huge risk with a show that most people thought was the wrong project and 32 years later... Sometimes great shows succeed, sometimes they bomb and sometimes poor shows find their audience or not. if a show doesn't "jump out on you" it might jump out on someone else and if you haven't seen it it's ignorant to make assumptions about it's selling powers. Going by titles alone, I wouldn't have bet that DEH, Comet or CFA would be hot tickets on Broadway but they are. Strictly Ballroom is a book musical comedy with dance, not a Vincent and Flavia dance show.

I don't know a great deal about Strictly Ballroom but from what I heard it sold well previously and is a solid show. With the right pricing, casting and marketing I could see it having a healthy run of a year or two. That said, I thought the same for The Girls so who knows.

I'm just bored sh*tless, Sistermaryann, of lazy film to musical adaptations especially after seeing the wonderfully original Caroline or Change last night

I don't think Once could be deemed a flop! I think they mean Guys and Dolls No I was making the point that not all the recent musicals in the Phoenix have been total flops.

You can't expect every new show to become an instant classic or long runner. Once did two years, that is still a good run and not a failure just because it's didn't run 10-20 years. While a closing is never good, it means another show can come in and hopefully do better.

If I may add my two-penneth worth. I saw Strictly Ballroom at the West Yorkshire Playhouse over Christmas. At that stage in its development, I wouldn't rate it any higher than ok, but what do I know. As I was leaving, I was eavesdropping on the ladies directly in front of me, a daughter and her elderly mother. The mother thought it was the best thing she had ever seen.

I'd be genuinely surprised if they drafted Alexandra Burke in to play Tina herself, especially if it is a bio-musical like Beautiful. Both her and Tina have very distinctive voices, which are polar opposites in terms of recognisability and tone. The Bodyguard wasn't much of a stretch for her, as luckily she wasn't playing Whitney, but rather Rachel Marron.

It was such a popular film back in the day and those fans of a certain age have disposable incomes, also it gets a free ad every Saturday come September. Tina will also do very well.

Ive always thought Strictly Ballroom being more niche to be honest, especially compared to something like Calendar Girls I kinda agree. Especially on doing my reseach on it (I had literally never heard of the film, which, if that is an indication for ayounger generation, may already be an issue), the film was a huge hit in Australia when released, but do people really remember the film that much? I wasn't around when it came out, so am genuinely curious. Because, as said previously, its main way of succeeding would be to open around the same time Strictly begins and promote the hell out of the show alongside it!

Really enjoyed Strictly Ballroom at the WYP - it needs a bit of work, particularly making the ending more of a big moment, but it's certainly worthy of the transfer. Whether or not it will sell is anyone's guess but at least it's something new (ish) for London.
