Heathers: The Musical - TRH / The Other Palace / @sohoplace

Saw this yesterday afternoon. It was pretty quiet - the circle and balcony looked almost empty!

However it was an excellent show - hoping for a cast recording asap! Everyone was loving it

3rd time for me tonight (gala night). It’s been a while since I’ve seen a show this many times in a short space of time but it really is just great fun. Upper circle on the side was pretty good! (Low numbers). Energy in the theatre tonight was great, obviously a lot of fans in.

If the Oscar Wildes can play their hand with an extra midweek matinee, surely Heathers can switch out Thursday afternoon and/or Monday for Sunday performances? They already performed on Sundays at TOP, after all...

Well. I don't think I've ever seen so many pairs of Converse trainers in one place. Every other member of the audience seemed to be wearing them. Emmeline Pankhurst would also have been delighted to see that the females in the audience outnumbered the mens by about 20 to 1. On the whole they were very well behaved but they do love their Carrie Hope Springs Eternal don't they? They were a-whooping and a-cheering for her and at the end of every song, they loved it! I was a little worried as they were playing lots of 80s songs before the show starts and a group of said girlies were singing along to 'Take on Me' by A-ha so I thought they would be trouble but they were quiet during the show. Well, I say they were singing along but sadly they attempted all of the high bits which didn't go quite so well. They gave up after the first chorus so I think they realised. They did play 'I Know What Boys Like' though which I hadn't heard for ages so that made up for it.

As for the show, I really rather enjoyed the first half but thought the second half dragged. The songs were all fairly catchy while they were on but I couldn't remember a single one for the life of me afterwards. There was one about being seventeen which I recall having a nice tune though. It is a bit of a strange show as we're supposed to be on the side of a murderer and hope that she gets a happy ending but she's still, well, a murderer. However, Carrie does have the chutzpah to carry off a rather frizzy perm for the whole show so perhaps we should give her some credit. She does give the score a bit of wellie though so that's a positive. Probably to distract from the perm. I like that she gets involved in the ensemble numbers too so it shows that she's not grown too bit for her mary janes just yet. Jamie Muscato is very good I thought, very funny. Except when he's murdering people of course. I also liked how Green Heather still has a bash at her disco number when she really can't sing it and Yellow Heather's shameless attempt to become the UK's Kristin Chenoweth.

But for me the entire show is stolen by Jodie Steele who, while clearly hasn't been to high school in a long time, was just sensational. The show really comes alive when she's in it. Also, special mention to Dominic Andersen and Chris Chung who are very funny as Ram and Kurt and I'd like to thank whoever made the decision to have them spend the second half of their show in matching underwear even for the curtain call. You will be on my Christmas card list.

Now where did I put my croquet mallet?

And they are very small pants. There are moments when they're just stood around in them with their mallets out.

Went for a visit last night- saw it around halfway through the other palace run. WOW. This show just keeps getting better!

Every single member of the cast on top for, Sophie Issacs, Jodie Steele and Rebecca Lock all steal it for me- without a doubt!

The changes that were made all done the show a favour, Shine a light feels more normal rather than just plonked right in. The new song; 'I say no' completely won me over, unsurpringly Carrie HF killed it!

Shame it's such a limited run, but hopefully, we get a recording of some kind. IMHO this cast knocks it out of the park compared to the off-broadway cast. Wish we could get a DVD recording, that wpuld be great, but a cast recording would suit me down to the ground!

Would love to go back for closing, but I doubt I'll be able to make it!

Oh dear!! Nobody screamed on Tuesday night but then that’s a Tuesday night audience after previews for you! They were still very appreciative but definitely a bigger mix than the mostly young adults of my last three times.

And no screaming when she ran out after the makeover either on Tuesday, which I’m always grateful for, being one of a rare breed of Heathers fans who actually want to hear the singing.
There seems to be an expectation from some of these Heathers fans that every audience MUST be the most enthusiastic and respond exactly the same way but that’s not how theatre audiences work. There’s so many factors at play: age, whether you know the show, personality, to name a few of the most obvious.
