That doesn't sound like it will be good news...

The rumours currently seem to be tipping to either a Royal death 😢 or announcement of abdication. But my fear is surely The Queen could wait until day time to tell everyone of abdication?

I imagine it will be nothing so momentous and as for "worldwide frenzy" as reported in the gutter red tops, really?

The Queen would not abdicate anyway - but if she did change her mind on that, she is politically savvy enough not to do so in the middle of an election campaign.
I have no idea what this is all about - but as none of the major news channels are trailing a big announcement, I am not expecting it to be anything too significant. But then I didn't expect a General Election this year... so what do I know?!

Yeah just to be clear, whilst the meetings and stuff are true, there is lot of social media speculation fueling rumours as well. Twitter has been blowing up since 3am about it.

I think the scary bit is that the meeting was called in the middle of the night. I can't think of anything but a royal death that would require getting everyone out of bed for. Unless the Queen just had a bad dream, sat up and said "Meh, I'm done, Charles is in charge from tomorrow on, make arrangements pronto!"

Unless the Queen just had a bad dream, sat up and said "Meh, I'm done, Charles is in charge from tomorrow on, make arrangements pronto!" Thats what I keep coming back to, the fact it was 3am! I mean, lets throw Camilla and Charles in the speculation though, as they are getting on a bit too!

"Thank you all for coming. You know, I've always been aware that I had the power to summon everyone at the drop of a hat and I've wanted to try it out for, like, forever. And now I have. Damn, this is so cool! I'm awesome as f**k. OK, you can go now."

Thankfully it is not a death, ITV are saying to expect an announcment mid-morning, and it could be to do with a different family member!
My bet is on Harry being engaged.

According to the BBC the meeting isn't until this morning, so not sure where the 3am rumour came from?

According to the BBC the meeting isn't until this morning, so not sure where the 3am rumour came from? The meeting was called at 3am so those travelling from other residences around the UK could travel to London for the meeting this morning.

According to the BBC the meeting isn't until this morning, so not sure where the 3am rumour came from? The Queen called the household together at 3am - the official announcement about what was going on is coming later. I'm just bored at work and a nosy sod, so I want to know what's going on

Now BBC are saying there is no cause for concern regarding bad news, so it seems whatever the announcement will be is good news?
Engagement? Baby? Beheading of Donald Trump?

Curiouser and curiouser. Like viserys I'm just bored at work and looking for any kind of diversion. My money would have been on Harry getting engaged but it seems odd to call and emergency meeting for that... I'm also weirdly fascinated by the protocol around the Queen's death, and as much as I don't wish her any ill I am intrigued to see what happens when (if? is she actually immortal?)

On the topic of the Queen dying, if you are interested, this is a facinating article on what will happen when she dies and the plans in place. Its long, but totally worth a read for intrigue! www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/16/what-happens-when-queen-elizabeth-dies-london-bridgeTwo other scenarios of things the announcement could be is a redevelopment of the Palace, which would affect the work of staff, or also her announcement into semi-retirement? We wont know until later today though!

10am seems to be when we are to expect the announcement.
Until it changes again.

I'm also thinking the semi-retirement scenario. Or full retirement, giving up all royal duties maybe. But not abdication.

Abdication in favour of Charles Can't they simply skip one generation, or would Charles have to abdicate himself first to make William king?

I still don't think it will be anything that could be seen as having any impact on the political life of the country - not in the middle of election season.
Unless there is an urgent health matter, there would be no need to rush out a statement about changes to the Queen's planned level of royal engagements.
Let's hope it is something positive.

Unless of course he was unable to take up the duties due to ill health or something, I'm guessing he would have to as well. I'm sure there's a process for 'rejecting' the appointment pre-coronation, but I think he'd have to be appointed and step down (albeit in fairly quick succession) rather than them just announcing it's going straight to William.
I think if it happened within the next couple of years Charles would become King, as he's certainly not old and infirm just yet. Though I can't help but feel he'd much rather just potter around at Highclare for the rest of his days.
