I absolutely love Groban but I don't think Pierre is a Tony-worthy role the way he's written in Comet. If it were actual War and Peace it would be quite another thing (Paul Dano was incredible in the BBC version) but in Comet, Pierre is just a grumpy drunk sod in a fat suit sulking around on the sidelines. As for Falsettos, I thought Rannells had the edge but Whizzer is probably considered Supporting? I somehow found Borle miscast. Pierre had a much bigger part in Great Comet than I was actually expecting, having read so many comments online saying how non-lead the part is. To me it did clearly feel like a lead part with the first half focused more on Natasha and the second half on Pierre, but yes not necessarily a Tony-worthy one. He still might get a nomination though. Totally agree with this. I was really pleasantly surprised by Groban's acting, I knew he was a gorgeous singer but I thought he did a great job all around. It won't be a threat to Platt or Karl though, I agree. And as much as I love Andy Karl and think he is doing a fabulous job, I do think it will be a real shame if the Tony goes to anyone other than Ben Platt, who is astonishingly good in DEH. For me the really interesting battle is the Come From Away/Dear Evan Hansen/Great Comet bunfight for best musical. DEH is the frontrunner but I think CFA could swing it as the dark horse.

Yea I'm sure it will be Ben because it's the "worthier" part and those tend to win awards all the time. Since I haven't seen Groundhog Day, I can't comment on Andy Karl's performance, but personally I think it's more difficult to pull off a character who's initially rather unlikeable and who needs to win the audience's affection than someone who's got the audience on his side from the first minute because who can't to some extent identify with the awkward outsider wanting to be loved? I love me some Andy Karl but is he that unlikeable at the beginning of 'Groundhog Day' though? He's just more of a smart ass isn't he?

Dunno, tbh. As I said I haven't seen the musical and I can't remember the movie. Just based on everything I read/heard, it's more of a redemption story of someone who's initially blasé about the job, the people and everything. Of course it's hard to dislike a character when blinded by an actor's amazing looks Whereas Evan Hansen starts out as this "woe is me" kid we all feel instantly sorry for (or are meant to).

^ Quite. What is the criteria for the Drama League awards? "You opened"? In fact I think I actually might be nominated too! In basic, with the performance catagory, anyone can be nominated on or off Broadway, Play or Musical as long as it opened in that season and is deciced by the Drama League. They have sometimes had as many as 70/80 nominees. The one rule is that once you win, you can never win it again, which is why Glenn, Patti and Christine are ineligable to ever recieve it again. It is also why it usually goes to an older person or someone giving a legendary performance. So in the year where you would of thought Kelli or Kristin would win, Chita won. The only younger winner of late was Neil Patrick Harris for Hedwig.

Does look like more of a long-list than a short-list of nominees and having so many, literally anyone, does somewhat diminish the fact that there are just some people there who are better than others. But hey, whatever floats their boat. The more nominees the bigger chance of a surprise, I guess, and that's always fun. And I like that there's no distinction between Broadway & Off-Broadway.

I wouldn't say everyone is on there haha... two main leading ladies are missing: Christy Altomare of Anastasia and Philippa Soo of Amelie are missing (somewhat surprisingly, considering Caroline O'Connor is nominated for Anastasia and that cast includes the likes of Ramin Karimloo!). The other surprising things with those two particularly not being nominated are they are considered by some the alternate Tony nominees for the 5th slot!

What we're missing here is that anyone can pay to become a member and vote hence these awards are basically pointless.

My bets are:
- Dear Evan Hansen wins Musical, Score, Actor and Featured Actress - Come From Away wins Book, maybe fight for Featured Actress - The Great Comet wins Featured Actor, Scenic Design, Costume Design and Direction.
Lighting and Orchestrations is a toss-up between DEH and Comet. Choreography without Dolly now seems to be bound to Comet.
- Hello, Dolly! wins Revival, Actress and may fight for Featured Actor
Play side:
- Oslo is winning play (or maybe Sweat) - Little Foxes vs Jitney in Revival - Linney vs. Metcalf for Actress - Kline has no competition in Actor - Featured Actor is a mess, I'm with DeVito now - Featured Actress is a bloodbath, between a repeat from Houdyshell and Nixon doing dual roles, I may end up with Joanna Day.
I have to believe that Set Design and Costume Design are bound to Little Foxes (Greendwood can't lost again, christ!), Direction may go to Sherr and Lighting no idea.

The thing is, with Great Comet, it has been such a strong season performance wise, so many performsnces people have been raving about! However, I think the performances in Great Comet, it wouldn't surprise me if any of them are nominated to be honest, but at the same time, both leads have had no awards love whatsoever thus far bar the Drama League who nominate everyone, so I have a feeling Mr. Groban, as good as he is, could be the Jennifer Hudson of this year and miss out. With actress, we know the three older divas are in, that is a given. Laura Osnes is a Tonys favourite, and has been nominated twice before and it wouldn't all surprise me to see her in there, especially considering she was nominated now here else apart from the Tonys for Bonnie & Clyde, id be surprised to not see her nominated. And Christy has been nominated everywhere thus far other than the Drama League. I think if Denee is in, it will be Christy out. The supporting catagories are packed. I actually, looking at your list @snutte agree Lucas will get in before Fred does for Sunset. But for actress, I could easily see the two Dear Evan Hansen ladies getting in, or if Hello Dolly! is looking to sweep, they could well throw another of the ladies in there with Kate. And then obviously there are two actresses in Anastasia who could contend. Other than Stephanie, Jenn and Rachel, all bets are off at the moment in that catagory.

Ah okay, I see where you're coming from! I personally completely ignore all the minor awards because they're often so bizarre, for instance Ben Platt not being nominated for Dear Evan Hansen when he was eligible (which he will likely win for) and Kelli O'Hara not being nominated for The King and I (which she did win for).
I think Groban has one up on Jennifer Hudson as his performance has been raved about in a way that hers wasn't. People enjoyed her vocals but said her acting was weak and if I remember rightly by the time Tony nominations came out, she had left and Heather Headley had taken over whose performance was received much better, which probably had an impact. I would be completely shocked if Lucas didn't get nominated, I think it's him vs. Gavin Creel for the win. Agree that featured actress could go any way aside from the three women that are seemingly locks (Jenn, Rachel, Stephanie). We could get 2 Anastasia ladies, 2 Natasha Pierre ladies, one of each or Kate Baldwin and Jennifer Laura Thompson, although I think the latter is unlikely due to her not really having any musical moments in the show which is unfortunate.
Denée is a tricky one. I think if she gets in, the strength of her show will have helped (vs. everyone else other than Bette). From what I've read of her performance, she's very capable but wasn't as impressive as Phillipa Soo in the role off-broadway. Whether voters will have seen Phillipa in the role is anyone's guess though. As for Christy, after watching this video, I just can't imagine her not getting in. I know it's a tight category and I do see a way for Osnes (or Noblezada or even Soo) getting in, but with even the negative reviews for Anastasia complimenting Christy, I just have a feeling she's in. Also, do bare in mind that the committee that choose the nominations (that are separate from the big block of people that vote for the winners) changes every three years, so whilst former members of the committee may be Osnes fans, the current committe may not be:

Whatever happens tomorrow, it will certainly be interesting to see! Indeed! Whilst I loved the Hamilton love-fest last year, it's nice to be so unsure of what's to come this time round, especially as there's so many more deserving shows than there was last year (in my opinion).

I completely agree. I am so glad that so many catagories this year hve alot of question marks! Anyone who knows me knows I love a female lead or featured and those are, in the performance catagories at least, looking to be the most interesting races. I mean, Featured has so many potential women to join Rachel, Jenn and Stephanie! And as for Lead, we know Bette, Patti and Christine are in, but the huge question mark lies in what seems to be Denee, Christy, Laura, Eva and, to an extent, Philippa too. Only one or two slots left, so there will be three or four actresses left out. But all deser ing I'm sure!

First winners already announced, as Gareth Fry and Pete Malkin get a special Tony for the sound design of The Encounter (and surely spurred the committee to reinstate the sound design Tonys). First blood to the British. And having worked with both of them can say they both worked incredibly hard on the project so great to see them getting a bit of recognition.
