Can we also agree David Hyde Pierces performance was possibly one of the worst ever for the Tony Awards. Bette was there and healthy, she could have performed any number from the show. Or even have Gavin perform something. When you choose to perform an initialy cut song, theres a problem. I blame Scott Rudin really, he pretty much just shrugged and slapped the other shows in the face by saying we can perform the worst song in the show and still have a box office hit. Its actually pretty disgusting, I admit that I was thinking along the same lines as you (though maybe not as extreme), but then callum did make a rather good point about it all: RE Bette, they wouldn't cough up the cash for the whole rehearsal process (presumably they wanted her to do Hello Dolly itself which requires full staircase set, costuming, big ensemble), and it didn't make much sense for Bette to do that much preparation. They don't need the promotion for the show (sold out for months) and it plays into the exclusivity of the whole thing. The only way you can see Bette as Dolly is to buy a ticket! And once I saw it from that perspective, you do see how it could be a bit of a savvy business move. DHP is popular enough and yes the song is a nothing, but who cares. No one is going to Dolly to primarily see DHP & that song, so no matter how bad it was, it will have put no one off because it's all about Bette. And it's totally true that sales and promotion are the absolute least of their worries. The exclusivity is also another valid point, too, so as much as they might as well have had no Dolly performance, what they did do won't harm anything, that's for sure.

No, it's not, and I found this year to be a bit of a relief. All four nominated shows were more or less balanced, and all four nominated shows really didn't have a BIG SONG that would work well out of context save for DEH, somewhat. I knew this would be less of a blowout, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, right? It's fine for the Tonys to be a little niche. Its appeal always going to be geographically and financially dependent in a way (are you near NYC/do you have $ to get here and see shows if you don't). Definitely not a bad thing. If a Hamilton-level show came along every year then it wouldn't have been so special when it did. Just thought it was interesting to point out some perspective for those that think Dear Evan Hansen could transfer to the West End and easily be a sell out success like Hamilton has been.

Seems the buzz around Dear Evan Hansen isn't even slightly close to what it was/is for Hamilton. Not even with Bette included. Of course not. Outside of the theatre community, no one knows (or cares) what a DEH is. Hamilton (and Book of Mormon, to a lesser extent but still so) reached out to a group of the public that would never consider seeing a Broadway show.

Sorry guys, I don't mean to be extreme about the Dolly performance, but it was just embarassing to watch. If not Bette, it should of been Gavin. That is the more entertaining of the Supporting Roles in my opinion, and he could of had a moment in the spotlight to prove why he deserved that Tony.

I agree with Danieljohnson14.
It could have been another number, like It Takes a Woman, Before the Parade Passes By, Waiter's Gallop..
But I think they didn't want to reveal any of its going on at the Shubert Theatre. Penny in My Pocket virtually has no staging, and is done in front of the curtain as an Act II opening. There is an air of privilege and exclusive access for people who actually have tickets to see the show live. Notice how there's no official press videos or trailer for the production. I think the producers just want to keep it this way, and virtually reveal nothing of the fabulous staging, at least not for free.

See in my heart I can see that is what should be coming off, but my head is just telling me it comes off as arrogance and Scott Rudin being a bit of a *fill in the blank with whatever adjective you wish*, fueled also by him inviting 40 odd people on stage and just saying "I'm gonna break the rules..."

Oh he sounds delightful. I'd like to see him try and cross Patti LuPone.

Okay so I just watched the entire thing (fast forwarding through the performances..there's something so sterile about these performances at Radio City).
A few observations: -Kevin Spacey. Never again, please. I didn't get (or care for) any of the references he made. Opening number is not bad but could have been 3 minutes shorter. -Gavin Creel's boyfriend is in the ensemble of Waitress -Petina Miller looks great pregnant -Christian Borle is gay. I've said it once and I'll say it again. First of all, he is. Second of all, look at the guy sitting next to him (he's date?). Third of all, he was married to Sutton Foster. -Bald Christian Borle putting on a wig as full-haired Christian Borle gives me life. -Bette Midler should have pulled a Julie Andrews. I feel it wasn't even fair competition to the other ladies. -When she's off social media, Cynthia Ervio is truly #BlackGirlMagic. Take her phone away. While you're at it, take Trump' phone away too. -In a parallel universe, I want Glenn Close to present Patti LuPone the Tony Award.

Well, there was a video posted in the Dolly thread recorded by an audience member of Bette doing the title number but it was swiftly taken down. I guess that'll be the closest thing to seeing it live if you can find a version online. But after seeing it myself this week, it is an absolutely exquisite production, Bette is worth every cent you can spend on seeing her, but I do hope it's recorded and preserved for the future near the end of the run because it is very special.

Yea I can see how problematic that could sound, but I was just trying to be gossipy.

WTF I agree, I wouldn't be at all surprised if he were gay. Its like, that dude who was married to Liza, we all knew he was gay! Who wouldn't marry a gay icon!

Well, Sutton Foster took David Burtka ( now Husband to NPH) as date to a school dance as a teenager. The girl had no gaydar, bless her.

Sutton hasn't aged since 1990. Christian has a... unique face. Andy Karl is one who I think is really hot, although has he had work done? I'd date Gavin. Hes really cute and seems in a complete world of his own ditzy, which makes him even cuter.

He's slightly strange looking, but rather attractive in his own strange looking way. I'd do him.

This thread has taken a real turn haha, but I find alot of the leading Broadway men attractive. Andrew Rannells too, is so cute, as is Brandon Uranowitz. But Brandon, like Gavin, you can just tell he is in a little world of rainnows and happiness all of his own.

They're probably medicated. I find Brandon attractive, Creel annoys me me beyond anything else and don't find him attractive. Rennells is not my type at all BUT I'd TOTALLY hang out with him, and think he's a kind hearted bitch, just like me. He also has a great sense of humor and is really funny.

Well it depends what you want out of them! If tou want a relationship you would have to reconsider your options, but if you want a do and dash job, you can always just cover their mouths before they have the chance to annoy you!

My little gay basic heart always falls for Jonathan Groff, but Andy Karl, Corey Cott, Daveed Diggs and Matt Doyle are in my "to do" list

Also, it's painfully obvious that, whole Hamilton was written by someone with a real connection to, and interest in, contemporary music, DEH was written by musical theatre composers trying very hard to sound like they are interested in having a stab at aiming for the charts.

Its interesting to see those on some of the Broadway message boards saying Bandstand and Groundhog will be the next to close up shop, yet Groundhog has week in, week out been closing in on $1 million weekly and Bandstand has steadily been increasing and wont be hurt by their stellar performance last night. Whilst I don't think either will be long runners sadly, I imagine Bandstand will make it through the Summer and Groundhog will make it to at least a year.
