At the time I didn't think it was anything special, just a costume change but since you've mentioned it I thought more about it and need to see it again! Costume change underwater, including boots, while holding your breath? Nothing special?  In my defence I was sat right up in the gods so I didn't see the minute detail of the change |

I guess it wasn't technically a musical, but a play with lots of songs/shanties... The NT's Treasure Island 2 years ago. When the ship rose up on the drum revolve, there was a round of applause for over a minute, with a couple of people standing up. Never seen that for a piece of scenery before! Yep, visually, Treasure Island was impressive but I'm afraid I found it the most turgid evening I have spend in a theatre for a long time. How can you make that material quite so tedious! |

Another underwater feat was at the end of the royal exchange's Edward II - poor Edward suffered the poker and he was dumped headfirst into a pool, with his head and shoulders underwater, whilst all around the coronation took place and the loose ends wrapped. He had his head under water for many minutes. Obviously he found a breathing device, but no bubbles, and not heaving chest. Seamlessly done and very impressive, and a great metaphor.

I think the first time I saw it I was so taken aback I may have thought the change was more complex. It's clearly a tearaway jobbie. No footwear. But in that time and underwater, still very impressive. |

In Sister Act, Eddie's transformations in I Could Be That Guy were always fun and only one person I went with spotted something underneath before the first one. (Don't know if this happens in the current UK touring production).

There's that very funny scene at the end of Priscilla where we get a speeded up version of all of the drag performances, speeded up and viewed from the back.

Birmingham Royal Ballet have a very impressive transformation in their Nutcracker, much better that the ROH's. I'd love a go at designing The Nutcracker. I've just done The secret garden, and the eventual appearance of the garden got a round most evenings - not necessarily for the design, but the combination of emotion, music, dram and design.

In Sister Act, Eddie's transformations in I Could Be That Guy were always fun and only one person I went with spotted something underneath before the first one. (Don't know if this happens in the current UK touring production). It does (and happened seamlessly last week with u/s Eddie, too), although it's amusing to watch the homeless ensemble moving into place knowing what's coming. Also amusing to see Eddie looking so much bulkier in the preceding scene with three layers on, although again you might not notice if you weren't looking for it. |

Did Sister Act at drama school, and being a 'homeless person' in that song, it was as much fun to rip the layers off Eddie as it is to watch it happen! |
