Well in terms of new musicals that season we had:
- After Midnight - Aladdin - Beautiful: The Carole King Musical - The Bridges of Madison County - Bullets Over Broadway - A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder - If/Then - Rocky the Musical
With the 4 nominated for Best Musical in bold.
I wouldn't call it a WEAK season, but there was really no standout in the way we had Fun Home the year after, Hamilton last year and seemingly a few standouts this year in Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen and The Great Comet.
I also think their choices in what to nominate were odd. I would have gone with Bridges and If/Then over After Midnight and Aladdin. It was certainly a weak year for the Best Musical category, but the season itself was stronger than this year's West End new musicals (as it is every year quite honestly) so I'm not quite sure how Aladdin managed to get a place at the Tonys but not at this year's Oliviers. Then again, is anything about this year's Oliviers remotely explainable?
