The Time Travellers Wife. Unless you get a fair bit of smoke and mirrors involved.

I would nominate The Last Unicorn. I love the book (and by extension the movie which was one of my favorites as a child) and I think there is plenty of potential for great songs in it. But I just don't see how they can convincingly create a single four-legged creature among two-legged humans that doesn't look like a panto horse. A theatre in Germany had a stab at it some years ago and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't really good either.

A complete Finnegan's Wake would be a bit of a stretch.

A complete Finnegan's Wake would be a bit of a stretch. Read the question! It's a dense, allusive, literary work that often resorts to its own made up language. I'd put it as being right near the top of difficult works to stage as a whole. I don't believe in absolute impossibility, anything might just work, however challenging. riverrun had a stab at a bit of it but that was a mere fragment of the whole. "a way a lone a last a loved a long the / riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay, brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs". A nice challenge for anyone.

Taken or any other action movie like that could be difficult to put on stage and probably not great. A Pixar movie like up,walle or inside out could be a challenge to put to stage. I would like to see a planet of the apes musical but it would have to be their version on the Simpsons

I'm with HG on this. I truly believe everything could be adapted.
I would be interested into why people think various pieces can't be adapted

I disagree with the idea that you couldn't do The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler. You'd either need to cast it REALLY carefully to preserve Gene Kemp's story-telling technique, or you could jettison that whole idea and just focus on the brilliant characters and story. It's SUCH a good book, there's way more to it than just what unimaginative people might consider a problem.
I think puppetry might be a decent idea for The Wasp Factory, there are some extremely vivid visuals that it would be a shame not to realise as faithfully as possible.

But The Crying Game managed it, even though you don't have quite as much creative freedom in film as you do in theatre.

Taken or any other action movie like that could be difficult to put on stage and probably not great. It depends how you adapt them. Eddie Ladd had a hit with her two solo Scarface shows, Scarface and the shorter Scarface Sawn-Off,

The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler. Why not? The author claimed that the reveal was accidental and isn't particularly important. In fact she dramatised it herself for schools (and there was a tv adaptation) Re Catcher in the Rye - it's no more internal than Curious Incident and I can imagine it getting the same treatment (if the rights were ever made available).

You have far more creative freedom in film than you do in the theatre, far more, it is not even close, CGI and animation being only one difference.

I agree with those who have said that anything can be adapted. I truly believe that any source material has the POTENTIAL to be adapted effectively to the stage - it only depends on who is hired to work on it, and what direction they decide to go with it. I think it's especially true if you don't limit it to musicals, which are much harder to write effectively. That isn't to say that a lot of them wouldn't end up being terrible, because it's very difficult to know exactly what choices to make in order to make the material adapt well, but I think it's always possible to make choices that work.
