The touring version of Matilda which is currently in the USA and Australia uses 2D versions of the 3D versions of the sets we see in London and when it was Broadway, so can very easily fit into a smaller theatre. The desks which rise up from underneath in London/NY actually come in from the side on the tour so once again they won't take up much space. I can see this being a very profitable tour Australia is more of a hybrid of the original production and the tour. Where the US tour uses cloth drops and flats for the side portals and back wall, Australia has more depth like the West End production. The main difference is that the Australian version does not have any traps and tracks the set pieces on. Only the side aisles are used for entrances rather than a central one, but all other elements are there (lasers etc). I think the Australian tour which is doing longer engagements is more likely to tour if it is going to the larger venues. The only thing that might change is the proscenium being more like the US tour. Unfortunately the US tour really does fair badly in comparison to all other productions... Thanks Butt! I hadn't realised the Australia used the side aisles and used the 3d sets so that's good to hear that they get a better quality set. The U.S. Tour one is very minimal looking with the 2D sets and Miss Honey's house being one big example. That tour finishes in a few months so I worry they will ship that set over here for the UK one.

Couldn't find the original Matilda thread (sorry no tour news!) but I thought this was quite funny!

Ahhh this was previously booked in to come to Plymouth in Jan 2018 when they usually have a big musical. Maybe it's been bumped to Jan 2019 now it's not opening until March 2018.

For Sunderland, MK and Manchester, ATG members can be naughty and book their tickets from 19th April. The revolting general sale starts a week later.

Guys do you expect Southampton and Bristol to appear on the tour? Think they're both down for 2019.

My 6 year old is now super excited! And they weren't even conceived when this show first opened. They are one of the post-MatildaTheMusicaliarian generation.

Hopefully Edinburgh or Glasgow gets added to this but I'm too impatient to wait till 2019 so looks like I'll be doing a bit of travelling next year.

I *think* Edinburgh is Christmas 2019...it's certainly going there at some point, just can't remember for sure if it's Christmas or not, but that tends to be when they get the "mega Musicals"

This should probably go in the unpopular opinions thread but...no matter how hard I try I can't seem to muster up a desire to see this? I LOVED the book as a child (I mean bookish nerd like Matlida isn't a great surprise) but attempts to listen to the score have never succeeded and I find myself recoiling whenever EP plays it on her show. Help? is this a 'you have to see it to love it' thing or am I better cutting my losses?

I would say get a cheap ticket if you can for when it's in Cardiff/if you're in London, and you might just be surprised

I do want to like it...but currently the score makes me feel like fingernails on a blackboard haha. I shall get a cheapish ticket in Cardiff for the tour so not to feel like I 'wasted' a London slot should I not like it after all!

Haha I have a six year old and a three year old who know all the words and religiously listen to the soundtrack. Don't think I've influenced them into being stagey at all.....
