Listening to performances of 'And I am telling you' makes me realise what a demanding song it is for the performer to sing!! In regards to people complaining about a standing ovation at the end, I don't think its unacceptable at all! If Effie sings the song well then you should reward them with a standing ovation! It must be so, so nice for the actress playing Effie to look out at 1,000+ people all standing up for YOU after you belted out a huge song!

It takes an awful lot more than just singing a song well to get a standing ovation.

Is Ruth saying she believes Marisha is trying to steal her job? If so, there must be some serious egos and bitchiness backstage. Isn't this basically the plot of Dreamgirls?!

I'm not going to disagree that singing a song well deserves acclaim, but my issue with the instant standing ovation for AITYING is that in the night I went, people stood and hollered as soon as she hit the big note at the end meaning a) lots were determined to do it anyway as if the whole half was leading up to that moment. Marisha was excellent but I think there was a core number in the audience who would have stood whatever had happened. B) those screaming and whooping wouldn't have heard the finish anyway and c) the way the score is written there isn't time for an applause breaks before the dreams come on, meaning an awkward moment where half those who were stood didn't seem to know what to do. I suspect that Dreamgirls May become like Wicked where the hard core "fans" will try to outdo each other or maybe look for that special moment when the actress playing Effie adds one extra note etc etc.

Marisha is doing both performances today, for those who haven't already seen.

Is it correct that all three girls are off tonight? Correct. I believe they have been all week! I know Liisi was taken ill last Friday if I remember correctly.

I'm watching all this with interest. I have tickets for March. I haven't heard any of these girls sing live, so the only thing bothering me is the idea of having people in front of me leaping up and whooping mid-song. They will get a sharp prod in their gluteus maximus (maximae?) if they try that anywhere in my line of vision.

I imagine Amber's return will be managed the same as SS in Funny Girl and she'll just turn up one night.
Audience will go mad, any possibility of watching and hearing the show without being distracted by screeching fools will be out of the window.

It won't be as big a drama as Amber's absence hasn't been as reported in the media as much as Sheridans, which was front page news etc. It's funny how in both shows when the main star has been off the understudy has got great reviews. First Natasha and now Marisha. Hopefully it'll be the start of Marisha's career now in leading roles!!

I imagine Amber will mention it on twitter or something when she returns. If I remember rightly, even the audiences at Sheridan's return show didn't know she was doing that performance? She just casually walked on stage after the Overture.

Amber is off sick and a few people talking about it on Theatre chat boards hardly makes a girl a star.

Well, the show has been publicised COMPLETELY off the back of Amber, and her appearances on several very high profile tv programmes singing that one iconic song. I think it's safe to assume that a lot of people have booked to see her over and above the show.

The show would have been publicised off the back of whoever was Effie as it's the big sing role in the show. Most people in the UK don't have a clue who Amber is, and Glee was a few years ago now so even that connection only goes so far in terms of publicity. Amber is not a name here like Sheridan is.

Amber is not a name here like Sheridan is. I don't believe I said she was. However a couple of million more people know Amber Riley now than did 24 hours ago, thanks to the BBC.

I think there's quite a big difference between Amber in this and Sheridan in Funny Girl. As said above, whoever was playing Effie would've been all over the TV etc performing, as Amber has been.
Funny Girl was always "SHERIDAN SMITH IN FUNNY GIRL", she was on all of the posters, she was absolutely synonymous with the show.
Yes people are booking this specifically to see Amber, but all the advertising is "DREAMGIRLS" - always happy to be corrected, but I haven't seen any "AMBER RILEY IN DREAMGIRLS" above-the-title marketing like we saw for Funny Girl.

I think Friedman will have learned a painful lesson with SS. Plus Amber was never going to do every show due to the vocal demands of the score.
