Watched my boy smash it as The Squip in ‘Be More Chill’ at uni. It was the last thing we saw before proper lockdown kicked in and I absolutely loathed it. It definitely belongs in a smaller setting like 6th form colleges or uni groups. How it sustained any sort of run at the Shaftesbury is a mystery to me…but tonight it was just right. A discreet fabulous band; nothing jarring to take you out of the tiny venue, and really well cast. So proud of his move from ‘quirky comedy one’ who ‘smashes one song’ to a character actor who learnt a main part in 3 weeks, with a work ethic…you did ask! ❤️

The casual observer passing Sheffield Cathedral today would be forgiven for thinking the city has suddenly found religion. It hasn't!
I don't know if they're onlookers or onlisters. Whatever they are, there are thousands of them here for the National 12-Bells Striking Contest. The Taylor Trophy is at stake, so it's a serious business. 🏆
Who knew that bell ringing is a/ so competitive and b/ such a popular spectator 'sport'?
I hope the Cathedral warned its closest neighbours. Listening to the same peal 10 times would probably try even my patience.
When one local resident previously complained, I know, for a fact, they received a reply from the Cathedral reminding them they lived in an apartment block called 'The Chimes'. Wish I'd never wasted a stamp! 🤣

I had two interesting experiences with ticket scanning this week. On Monday, I went to see Dr. Semmelweiss after visiting the National Gallery. I brought up my theater ticket on my phone, it was scanned... and while looking at it on the way to my seat, I realized I'd pulled up my National Gallery ticket, NOT the show ticket!
The next night, I went to see Dear England. There was one empty seat to my left and a young woman came in and seemed to be expecting two free seats. There was some discussion with the person in the 'wrong' seat and they compared tickets. The young woman's ticket was for the next night's performance. The gentleman in the contested seat consoled her with "at least it's not for LAST night!" I can understand how this happened, though, as nobody scanned any tickets at the Olivier.

It's been a really tough week, so I decided I needed a nice day out.
I'm currently sitting just yards from David Mellor's magnificent Round Building in Hathersage, drinking coffee from a David Mellor cup sitting on a David Mellor saucer, poured from a David Mellor cafetiere and stirred with a David Mellor spoon, all brought to my David Mellor table on a David Mellor tray.
Yes, I'm slightly obsessed with David Mellor*.
(*Not that David Mellor, the other one.)

The Twitter app on my phone (Samsung Galaxy), having been playing up for a couple of months, today decided to refuse to send any tweets full stop. I decided to uninstall & reinstall it, which I've done with apps before when they've played up. However having uninstalled it the Google Play app store is informing me I cannot redownload it. Has anyone else had this problem?

How depressing. I certainly can't afford to buy a new phone at the moment, quite apart from not wanting to do so on general principal while mine still works. I am on only my second ever smartphone & I only bought the second one, at the end of 2016, when the first one, from 2011, died suddenly & unrepairably. Given we are supposed to be trying to be a less throw-away society to save the planet, I find it disgusting when companies try to to force people into buying new products.

If there is nothing wrong with a phone, and I have had no problems with mine apart from the recent Twitter one, then it should still be supported. Given the resources, especially minerals, needed to manufacture mobile phones people should be able to use them for as long as possible. |

I guess I'll be accessing Twitter via the website then, like I do on my laptop, and ignoring the annoying "Twitter is better on the app" messages. I am not going to be forced into getting rid of an otherwise perfectly fine phone!

But Dawnstar isn't looking for support or an update... they are looking for the app to work the way it used to or the ability to download the version of the app that does work on their phone. |

I’ve made a day trip to Jersey. Very nice, but made solely because it means I can keep BA status (free seat selection, extra Avios, lounge access etc - so a good financial decision). Plus, they have a good beer selection in the executive lounge.
Waiting to board the plane, alongside various people in the priority queues. It is delayed. Just heard they can’t open the door to offload the luggage from the previous flight.
There’s a nice male-female couple with three young boys, with conversations like “some children have to go to schools which have girls” and (from child who looks about 8), “I won’t have sugar for breakfast in Dubai, I’ll have sashimi”.
Also, a nice male-male couple with two young boys, who were also in the lounge, who told one of them when they were getting too excited to whatever they were listening to through their headphones.
All the children are well behaved, so no issues there. But they are still not boarding and I could have stayed in the lounge for another 30 minutes.
Still, this is when I pretend to be sophisticated for a very short period of time for future benefits. It really isn’t reflected in my salary!

Just in case anyone is interested, we did get on the plane, at which point they announced they couldn't close the luggage door.
I was busy on my phone researching what I was entitled to if I didn't get home that day (bearing in mind, I hadn't planned for an overnight stay), but eventually we left around two hours late. So, I'm home, no harm done, but many of the other passengers will have missed their last connection (not sure what will have happened with the crew, who had one further trip tonight on the same plane) - doors permitting.
For people reading this who need BA tier points, I recommend Jersey, but they don't seem to have much of the way in theatres. The service on the Heathrow to Jersey route is about ten times better than on the London City Airport to Jersey route. In Jersey airport, note that once you go through the Duty Free store, you're stuck in the limited gate area and can't go back.
Now my flights are done for the time being, my next fun task is to renew my passport.

Do you know, Dr Tom, I'm a little bit jealous. I love Jersey. It's like going abroad... but without most of the hassle. Work on refurbishing the Opera House seems to be about 18 months behind schedule, with the rebuilding of Fort Regent, including a flexible entertainment venue, far in the future. Yes, the airport is 'unusual'. Most airports can't wait to get you out of the check-in area and through security. At Jersey, there's nowhere to go! |

Dr Tom that’s good to know about your Avios and Tier points. I’m a Silver member and needed some extra Tier points by Nov to keep that level. I have 2 trips away booked by then but still leaves me short. So I booked a quick trip to Malta as it gave me the 80 tier points I needed. I never thought of Jersey.
