Currently having a wander around Battersea Power Station. A fantastic building with a lovely art deco interior. I’m glad they have kept a lot of the original features such as the cranes and other bits of the station dotted around the building. They have converted one of the chimneys into a lift shaft so I’ve taken the opportunity to have a lift ride in the NW chimney. Some lovely views of the city at the top.

Went to see Newsies yesterday (see report on that thread). I am quite a friendly person and like to have a chat to people sitting next to me at the theatre. Often you can tell they don't want to talk which is fine by me but yesterday I had a couple of really nice experiences. Got there early so was sitting in the foyer and immediately got into a conversation with a really lovely guy who has come from Wales for the weekend to see this and another show. We immediately started talking theatre and discovered that we are booked to see several of the same shows and 2 concerts on the same nights. We both also had a mutual friend of a west end actor. But then it got bizarre as he mentioned something about being a holiday rep. I said to him that I used to be a holiday rep and turns out we both worked for the same company at the same time but in different locations so our paths never crossed. Isn't life strange!
Then when I took my seat got chatting to another really nice guy who, again, had seen many of the shows I had seen recently so we got to compare notes.
Something like that can really help make the day.

As much as I love theatre and TheatreBoard, it's good to have other interests. I knew I'd never be as good a dancer as our david, so a few months ago I joined a newly formed 'all-comers' choir. We've just had one final rehearsal before making our public debut later this afternoon. My Deck The Halls will probably go down in history, with people still talking about it in years to come. 🙂 |

Plus they don’t tend to think it strange if you are on your own or have what *most* people would call a large number of shows planned in a short space of time!!!!  I engaged the check out woman in Asda in conversation and managed to take her from “suspicious and frankly do I have to bother talking to her” to “have a lovely day and see you again soon *huge genuine smile* My children hate being out with me….. |

Never buy a Curry's Essential fridge/freezer! We only got ours in January & it's defrosted everywhere. All the food ruined. Engineer came & said it's because it's too cold. It will work again after the cold spell. What utter nonsense. Years ago nobody had central heating & their fridges didn't break down. Really angry. - Rant over. Thank you for listening.

The secret, anita, is to have your fridge freezer in the living room. When I'm walking home from the station of an evening, I pass a tiny terrace house which has a giant American-style fridge freezer right next to the massive telly bolted to the wall. I'm surprised there's any room for a sofa, which always has a spaniel reclining along the top. |

Somewhat randomly (as per thread title), the price of gas this morning is £170.80/MWh - a dramatic fall. Ambient temp has risen more than 10'. Turns out, the UK did pretty well during that nasty 7-10 day Arctic spell, much aided by huge capacity to re-process imported liquid gas - and which, in turn, also allowed sizable energy exports through the pipes to beleaguered France. The US helped somewhat by selling additional gas to the UK market, where it could be processed before piping onwards to mainland Europe. At times, 10% of UK production was piped to Europe. This morning wind and nuclear are maxing out but gas has plenty of capacity. All in all, a pretty decent test of UK energy resilience. Positively balmy out today |

I have always found the talk of U.K. resilience being an issue as strange, we are an energy rich nation, if we did have an issue then that would be a calamitous failure of policy, nobody is concerned about Norway and it should be the same for the U.K.
Throughout the year we have been a net exporter of gas which is to be expected and is the only thing that has kept our export figures palatable as the EU increased their demand.

Lately I seem to have encountered more people who need to "win" every in-person conversation or message board discussion, often to the point of refusing to move on or consider other points of view.
I'm most bemused when the subject at hand has no discernible objective correct answer, but simply is a matter of opinion.
My new approach is to simply say "You win. Congratulations. Your trophy will be sent for engraving and then dispatched to your care."
Their befuddled reaction mines for me a small amount of joy out of what had been a frustrating experience.

My Yorkshire radar has served me very well today. First it guided me into Poundland, where BurlyBeaR's favourite fancies had already been reduced, despite a BBE of 28 December. Guess how much for 32 of the little sponge squares? That's right, £1, or only 25p for a box of eight. Then it was off to Aldi just in time for everything being reduced by 75%. I bought a turkey joint, goose fat roast potatoes, a punnet of mushrooms, a packet of breadcakes and two bottles of beer...for the ladies. Guess how much? £5.30. It didn't even reach my debit card threshold, so I paid cash. The turkey, complete with stuffing and bacon, had already been reduced from £11.99 to £5.99. so with the extra 75% off, I actually paid £1.50! |

Woke up this morning to the news that our heating was declining to work. Fortunately the heating company were able to send an engineer within a couple of hours who has patched it up, pending a new part which will have to be ordered & probably won't arrive until the new year. So we get to spend the next week or two praying that the heating keeps working. It did it again! What are the odds?! We realised about 9.30pm last night that the heating wasn't doing anything even though it was supposed to be on. Heating engineer came this morning. Apparently our boiler has 2 plastic tubes. One went this time last year, the other last night. Again it's been patched up pending a new part. Surely, since there are only 2 of these tubes, it's not going to happen a third year in a row..... (I'll get back to everyone this time next year!) |

New Year queueing this morning at my fashionable North London lido. It's a curious thing, where I live the voices and accents are Somali, Caribbean, a few East European. An 8-minute cycle away and it's French, a little USA, Dutch. London eh. Anyway, amid the milling mob of expensive bobble hats and pre-ski slopes chatter, a solid 8' was had. This is loosely theatre related, but tonight I went to see Joss Stone at the Palladium and have left feeling totally deflated.
I've been a fan since I was a little kid and loved the gig, so after the show we went to the stage door, along with quite a few other people. I literally never do stage door, but I've been a fan for so long that I kind of got caught up in the night.
We waited for about half an hour, in which time her boyfriend came out with her kids in a pram and was lovely to us all, speaking to everyone and thanking us for waiting.
Then Joss eventually came out...although the fans were waiting at the door, she came out of the black side door just up the road towards Argyle Street, put her hood up, looked at all of us as if we were scum and went into her car ignoring everyone.
It wasn't even like she tried to be discreet, she literally made us all feel terrible and so many people were extremely upset. Like I said I never do stage door and know that 'stars' aren't obliged to do it, but the way she treated us tonight has left a really bad taste in my mouth to be honest.
Amazing voice, terrible attitude unfortunately.
