peggs That's an easy one to get out of at the moment: just say you're feeling a bit under the weather with a cough & temperature and no-one will want you anywhere near their mugs!

For goodness sake, is this how it is done these days? Agree with Dawnstar, cough and mop your brow as you go in ...you’ll prob get the day off.

Just read an article about 2 mountain rescue people going back out in their own time to try and find a dog scared from its owner when they were rescued by helicopter. They took a portable bbq and lured it out with sausages. Burst into tears. Under weather and my dog died at the weekend and turns out I'm somewhat emotional.

Why do some public wifi networks block Theatreboard? Bad enough when train wifi is advertised but either stock itself isn't equipped (some Thameslinks) or wifi takes you round in an endless loop without ever allowing you to browse (SWT) but when another (GWR) blocks a site which is not only innocuous but would pass some of the extra captive time spent circumnavigating yet another landslip, it's very frustrating.

I'm 100% sure someone I know (R) is being scammed. But they absolutely refute it. And for the last 5 days I've been trying to get more information about agencies who could help. Police on 101 - R has to talk to them directly, can't be through me. Age Concern (R is over 70) have some leaflets I could download, or R could pop into the local branch. Action Fraud - R can make a report they can follow through on.
But R is convinced the gentleman that's told R he needs money for leukemia meds is for real. Oh, and R dropped the "he's a Major in the US Army" when questioned further this week when there was another request for £'s because of immigration issues.
Action Fraud say I can file a report but I need to give R's details, address and stuff. GDPR forbids me from doing that.
It's really upset me this week.

If you can, speak to someone in R’s family or immediate circle. Don’t make it a secret. Get it out there. The scammers rely on the victim not seeking advice. Get them to talk to R. Risk your friendship but will save him and he will come back to you. Last resort, sneak round and disable R’s internet. I’m surprised the police don’t reposed as I thought there was a special section you could report to. If ness say it is you so they will begin some action. Also do you know his bank? Go in as far up the food chain as poss and alert them to something going on.

londonmzfitz That's awful. There's a series on the BBC sometimes called For Love or Money that focuses on scams that sound exactly like this. It's quite shocking because the stories just get more and more outlandish, yet the person being scammed still ends up believing them and sending money. Is there any way you could get R to watch that?

It is extremely hard to get someone to see the truth, very very hard. Something inside of us build s a barrier. It can cause awful family situations. Even when a scam is revealed the victim can reinterpret what has happened. So best of luck if you have a go but don’t expect to be thanked.

Go in as far up the food chain as poss and alert them to something going on. I'm in a tricky position because it's work related. I've asked R if their son is still living at home and I believe he is, but can't verify if he's aware of what R is doing (I'm not local to where R lives). Again, I'm going to be in breach of the company GDPR regs if I take direct action. Police on 101 said they'd send a copper around to have a chat which I think would give R a heart attack. I just can't believe there isn't a process for this sort of thing. You see reports on the telly about how people have been scammed and it takes a while for them to accept this is what's happened - R is absolutely certain the (and it's not insignificant sums) money is helping someone she thinks she knows well.

Get the policeman/woman round for a chat. That might shock R into some kind of reaction. Need not know it is you who has asked and tip off the police person to this effect. ‘Activity in the area’ kind of thing.. best of luck and well done for trying.

Some while ago now I was in one of those money transfer shops and it was heartbreaking. One of those stings where a middle aged woman sends money so the man can visit, in this case from the USA. He had been saying he hadn't received what she'd sent and so she sent more, and more - he needed a passport, transport tickets.
She'd come into the money shop to check again if the money had been sent to the right address each time. I think in her heart she knew but when the assistant explained really gently the money definitely went through .. ouf. This was a lady in Peckham. So harsh and so brutal.

If you happen to know who she banks with it may be worth informing them of your suspicions.

If you happen to know who she banks with it may be worth informing them of your suspicions. It was several years ago. I can't remember now exactly how I got the impression - something she said to the counter assistant - but he'd all but cleaned her out. I strongly doubt she had much in the first place.

Totally agree, @theatremonkey. Ep 1 was obviously special, as the first of the reboot, but last Friday's was, I thought, the best yet. Great set of kids - I was afraid Lillian was going to explode - and loved the way all the (so-called) grown-ups really went for it during the karaoke.
You may be right, and maybe there's an Equity agreement, but I've always thought the Pidentity participants are just random people picked up in Piccadilly Gardens. I'm hoping to see a certain bear 🐻 one Friday...unless he's too burly to fit in a box! 😉

Hoping they don't close the libraries [like they have in USA] or I will be out of contact with everyone as no internet at home.

How is my day?
Well... I’m in temporary accommodation, having planned to be travelling for the next few months, which is obviously now off the table. I am trying to get into a flat asap; because my financial package is a little unorthodox (I was a full-time carer for my mother until she died last year, which means I don’t have three years of bank statements showing income above a certain level - but I inherited half her house, which we sold, and there’s more than enough money in my savings account to pay an entire rental contract upfront - and, for that matter, to pay rent for a few years) the process is not proceeding quickly. I’ll be OK, and I’m being very careful, but the waiting is very, very uncomfortable, and letting agents don’t seem to give two hoots about any perceived sense of urgency based on what’s happening in the news.
So all in all, my day could be better!

Now might the time to get interneted at home if finances allow. Or maybe there are still Internet cafes you could find near where you live. As long as you wipe everything down with a disinfectant and don’t be shy about that, you should be ok.

^sf,sounds like a real uncertain time for you with everything you described as well as the virus issues...sending you positive thoughts for the future,Sir Thank you. I will be OK, but this isn’t the most comfortable experience - all the more so coming after a very, very stressful few years. I’’m not going to end up on the street, but I need to be in an environment I can control, and sooner rather than later.

I know of quite a few libraries that have shut so hopefully yours is open for a bit longer, if you do get on here again soon I hope it's not your last visit for a long time.

I remember you've got a granddaughter who visits regularly. Has she got an old smartphone sitting in a draw. Then you'd just need a PAYG sim, which are widely available, plus a small amount of credit. Anyway, just a hopefully helpful suggestion. 🙂

Day one working from home on the bosses laptop ... Up, showered, dressed (odd socks, no make up and NO BRA)! Group conference call discover I need a headset so zipped to Argos (again, odd socks, no make up etc) ... Lunchtime did a zip to Lidl for their amazing Cauliflower Cheese Pie (it's a pie full of cauliflower cheese and I love it).
Lunch over, back to the grindstone ....
