I am currently in a virtual queue for the Vue cinema website. Mad times! I have never had to queue up to get a cinema ticket. It says the waiting time is 8 minutes.

I saw a couple in full Pirates of the Caribbean costume while I was walking to the cinema yesterday, clearly Saturday night is peak fancy dress party time... Hi guys, also in town for theatre weekend! there’s a film and comic convention on at the convention centre, which is why there are so many people wandering around in costume. I'm in London though, not Manchester!

I'm currently en route to Darlington on my day off work to see some of my family that live in England. Have to say the free LNER wifi in Standard class is working well enough to catch up on the board! As mentioned above though these trains really are ancient now and don't give a smooth ride. Was also shocked as I can usually travel in first class for only slightly more money on a weekend...not the case today! I actually found a few weeks ago a first class advance ticket was cheaper than the standard class ticket, which has ended up being free because the train was delayed ... a lot. I will experienced that in the past. Really annoying this time as the first ticket is exactly double the price of standard (£120) and first class was almost completely empty on the outbound leg!

Two of the places I feel comfortable eating on my own are TGI Fridays and Ed's Easy Diner, which do offer unlimited refills of 'soda'. It surely can't be a coincidence that they both have an American theme (though having never been to the US, I suspect neither is particularly authentic).

I once had food poisoning from Ed's Easy Diner. It gave me what can only be described as a "gut like Gallipoli" I have not patronised that establishment again since.

Yep, there was a nerd con in London too. It seems to be the weekend for it! I wonder if they were both run by the same company? If so, I bet they had some international guests booked in for one day in London and one in Manchester.

On a serious note, down to differences in economy and consumer behaviour, I think.
In the US, most businesses are taxed by turnover. UK, it's fixed - business rent etc. That means less margin to give anything away.
Consumer behaviour: US customers are used to paying for everything and any small "kindess" is taken as a token to compensate for that.
The UK generally expects that if something is "for free" then it should be taken advantage of to the hilt (like the NHS). As Hoover (free flights of course) and McDonalds to name two, have learned. McDonalds in particular was interesting - they never expected people to actually research "Trivial Pursuit" answers for free food. We were the only territory that did.
Anyone who is familiar with the frequent flyer miles/hotel points world will know that gaming promotions is a very popular hobby. Companies are quite frequently taken by surprise when people work out what, for e.g., is the lowest possible life insurance premium they can buy for the shortest possibly qualifying period to earn bonus miles (I think £1.50 a month for 6 months was the record - for 10,000 Virgin Atlantic Miles). I once paid a fiver to insure a non-existent cat! Hilariously, that promotion led to someone on Mumsnet wondering if their husband was living a secret double-life, because she discovered he’s taken out pet insurance for a non-existent cat and thought he must be keeping a mistress...

I keep finding wasps in my kitchen. They seem to get getting in through a gap in the plaster at the foot of the wall somewhere behind the sink. I don't know where they're coming from because I haven't noticed any wasps hanging around outside on the other side of the wall. It's as if my house has decided to spontaneously generate wasps.
I've been meaning to get around to recarpeting the kitchen and filling the holes in the plaster while I'm at it so it looks like I'll have to put that task on my list of things to do this year. I'm not looking forward to it. The main issue is the pain of dealing with the plumbing, as it always seems to take me half a tube of Furnox LS-X to stop the leaks.

It's 1.15am, I'm on a very slow train back from London & there are 2 children who look about 5-8 years old running around. Why on earth would parents have small children on a train at this hour?

I have noticed an unusually large number of wasps in my garden during this very dry weather, especially around my pond. I’ve been told they’re looking for water, so it could be they’ve located water in your kitchen if you have leaks . Just a suggestion .

Buy a camper van and save yourself one out of two jobs. Good idea. That would relieve some of the tent-ion I'm feeling. I'll book my own...

Feeling a bit down with certain things happening in my professional life (can't say more, because I'm an idiot who posts under their full name). Anyways, if I could whistle, I would whistle a happy tune. Instead I need to listen to Kelli O'Hara telling me to whistle a happy tune. Not helping, Kelli.

This is nesting time - check that you don't have a colony starting. Yep, the wasps are about for sure. I sat outside for a while and watched for wasps. The kitchen is a single-storey extension to the house and has an old asbestos-sheet roof (which is something else on my list of things to fix when I get around to it, though it's harmless enough if I leave it alone) and I noticed a couple of wasps disappearing under the bit at the top of the roof that covers the join between the two sides. (I'm not up on roofing terms.) I guess there's a nest under there somewhere. So I've been all over the inside of the kitchen ceiling with a sealant gun blocking every gap I can find and hopefully that will keep them out for a while. I'll contact Rentokil tomorrow, because I don't want them chewing their way through the ceiling. I had some bumble bees in the same roof a couple of years ago. They were no trouble at all, though their buzzing scared the crap out of me the first time I heard it.

Gone and got myself a Odeon Limitless card (well I've paid for it at least) so I might actually start going to the cinema far more and seeing all the films that I'd actually like to see. Feel like I hardly ever go to the cinema so I'm not entirely sure why I've gone and paid for it but if it's already paid for I'm far more likely to go, at least I feel like that'll be the case. So when I don't have the money for a last minute London theatre trip I can go and catch a film for (in theory) free instead

I'll contact Rentokil tomorrow Check with your local council first, as they are likely to be way cheaper if they have a service - or will know of ones that are. I didn't think of that. Thanks. The council website has a list of approved contractors so I'll try one of those.

I hate waiting for people. I had a Skype called to be interviewed for someone's research. It was scheduled for 10 and at 10 they emailed and said 'be with you in a moment' at 10.50 I've still not heard boo.
I'm also waiting for a bunch of things to be confirmed in London for which I am travelling and staying over. And having the classic 'people not in London forget London is a place people have to travel to/spend money to be in' etc etc

I haven't known what to do with myself since the World Cup finished, so I literally cannot wait for 8pm tonight. If I was a betting man, my money would be on Reading to beat Derby 2-1.
It will surely be only few years until the new football season starts before the old one has ended!

So there I was. Totally excited at TallPaul 's news and the prospect of the imminent football season, having been so miserable for all of four and a half hours without it around. You know. That kind of excited. I made myself a looooooooong drink to celebrate. Highball glass, loads of ice (purchased in a giant bag, none of your pathetic, tiddly-widdly stupid made at home shards you can't bash out of the tray thank you very much) slice of lemon, slice of lime. Luverly. Glass freeeeeeezing cold, condensation already forming. Jelus yet? Mmmmmmmmmm. Went to sit on the sofa. Big mistake. Guess which Abba song I've got going round in a loop in my head...
