Just over six months to go until the 70th anniversary fringe takes over Edinburgh for three and a half weeks, with the first shows going on sale this Thursday. Who's planning to head up to Scotland this summer? I'll be there for the first week of the festival and then for some, or all, of the final week. Hotel booked and Friends of the Fringe membership renewed. Almost time to dust off the colour-coded planning spreadsheet and bring it out of its digital hibernation once again...

Struggle to fit it in around other stuff though Same! it's always a tricky one to juggle, and in recent years has been either the month of no work on a zero hours contract, or month between jobs due to endless short term contracts so makes it difficult to plan for. On day maybe! (though I'm far too old and grumpy for large student style housing!)

Will be around 16-19th. Missed last year so very hungry to see this years programme.
Will watch this tread with interest as always looking for tips.
Seemed to be less shows and plays in 2015, hope thats not a trend that continues.

Can't wait, it will be our 7th visit in a row this year. Probably only there for 4 or 5 days this time though, it's so expensive. We often stay in Glasgow rather than Edinburgh, even taking travel into account it can half or less your accommodation costs. I'm also a big fan of colour coded spreadsheets. let the Edmin begin

Was only there for a day and had a dog with us so it was a bit impractical . Had a good vibe but sadly have to leave the dog to enjoy it this year.

Oddly enough that was our first time as well but being horrible human beings we left him in the car in a multi storey and sneaked off to see a show and Alan Rickman holding court on South Bridge. Been back 4 times since.

I went for the first time last year and LOVED it. The atmosphere was fabulous, I met / made so many stagey friends and got to rub shoulders with some rather interesting people thank to a very well connected colleague. Absolutely brilliant. I'm hoping to go back up this year but trying to get a job working up there for the month to try and make it a bit more affordable.

I used to live in Edinburgh so I've been a few times, haven't been back recently though - will be interested to see if there are any good shows on to persuade me to take a long weekend off work and head up!

I don't think I could handle Edinburgh. I get severe FOMO just from London theatre. It might be nice to get a few mates together and take a whole apartment for a week, but I fear it would also be extremely expensive to do so.

I'm hoping to go back up this year but trying to get a job working up there for the month to try and make it a bit more affordable. It's definitely the atmosphere and buzz that makes the Fringe what it is, nowhere more so than on the Royal Mile. I first went six years ago, just for one night, and enjoyed it so much that I booked a return visit for later in the same festival. The following year that increased to five days in early August and a couple of days towards the end of the month. Since then, my regular itinerary has been to stay there for the whole of the first week and then revisit for variable amounts of time in the last week depending on how much else I want to see. I don't think I'll ever get tired of wandering the Royal Mile when flyering is in full effect, with the various stages along the Mile in full swing, while pretty much every queue has stagey people happy to share tips on what to see. There's nowhere I'd rather be in August than Edinburgh!

I should also confess to spending time there with a sandwich board, giving out fliers & accosting strange men - trying to persuade them to visit the show I was promoting.

Oh the shame Monkey! We'll have to hand in our badges... or start checking out "air b'n'b" pretty quick, I guess... We could share a flat. Call it the House of Theatre Rejects and Grumpy Bastards Too Old for Student Nonsense.
or something equally catchy.

Can I come? Never been either. The ultimate in Theatreboard meet-ups Let's do it! a house of Edinburgh virgins...who will emerge fully sullied by the Fringe
I mean honestly if I were ever to do it, that's how I'd do it!

or start checking out "air b'n'b" pretty quick, I guess... If you make the journey north TM, I'll be expecting seating plans and tips on where to sit for all 300+ fringe venues. Seating tip. As most shows aren't numbered you can pick where you want to sit. If you don't choose one absolute stinker, you just aren't being adventurous enough. The tip is sit at the end of a row close to the exit. Sooner or later the performer will turn around and then....
