Did anyone see this documentary on the BBC over Christmas? It is currently on iPlayer. Some interesting interviews.
Can anyone tell me who the singers were that played Tony and Maria? I recognised Debbie Kurup as Anita, Stewart Clarke as Riff and Gemma Sutton as 'Somewhere' girl.

Very interesting programme!! I think if you can slow down the end credits they did give the singers names.

Bruno Tonioli gushing like a schoolgirl over anyone involved with the film. Who was the woman doing dome of the interviews?

Wasn't it Rob Houchen as Tony and Christine Allado as Maria? Loved this documentary! It was. Christine was briefly in In The Heights last year, and Rob was in Titanic. A really interesting documentary.

...and how great were they?!? I'd love a recording with this cast, Houchen in particular was brilliant.

Rob Houchen was the best Marius I've seen in Les Mis, and I've seen quite a few over the years. He played the role for three years and has the most beautiful voice. I'm sure he has a great future ahead of him!

Wasn't it interesting. Bernsteins daughter was a bit "stagey" though. And wasn't Sondheim handsome in his youth!

Wasn't it interesting. Bernsteins daughter was a bit "stagey" though. And wasn't Sondheim handsome in his youth! Yes to both! I thought Sondheim came across really well - liked him a lot. I also thought the 'original' Maria seemed lovely - I was moved to tears by her account of the reaction of the actor who played Tony to the additional song that was written for him ('Something's Coming'), and by her account of opening night. It's a shame that there weren't any clips of the original cast performing. I just went on YT and managed to find a clip of the two leads. Sound and picture quality isn't great, but it gives an idea:- Incidentally, I found myself thinking that the story of the creation of WSS would make a good film.

Wasn't it interesting. Bernsteins daughter was a bit "stagey" though. And wasn't Sondheim handsome in his youth! I've read the book Steven Sondheim- A Life and they mention one of his distinctive trademarks is his crooked smile. Robbie Williams has the same smile. Interesting fact. It also stated that if he weren't gay, the woman he would have married would have been Lee Remick.
