This is not a great advert for Motown - seemed as if they were trying just a bit too hard.

The Motown bit was filmed yesterday. Alfie Boe and Michael Ball are filming their "bit" on Friday.
Not sure how all of the above fits into the "boyband" pop theme but there you go.

I don't think they picked the right ones but I'm glad a band gets to stick together so they will have more of a bond next week.

Now that was an odd decision. Iron Sun had a couple of really strong members - better than some members of Drive
Makes it easier for Five to Five to win - which is clearly what is wanted by two sets of producers.

Yeah, I agree with OxfordSimon - I had thought three of Iron Sun would get through and two of Drive. But, on the other hand, Iron Sun seemed to genuinely get along, so maybe it would have been sad to pick and choose like that. I will be feeling the loss of Jordan on the show....

I liked Clinton in the 'song-off' and the guy with the floppy kind of sixties hair.

The folks in the band don't need to get along and be best friends, the producers and judges are obsessed with them being this though.
They just need to be able to ACT like they are.
Huge difference!

Can't believe Iron Sun left, my favourite band by far!
Loved Clinton and Harry "Fabulous"

I actually watched this today and thought they'd keep the whole of Iron Sun! Shows what I know! Don't think I'll be invited as a guest judge any time soon! I'm also suspecting that I'm in a majority of one in liking the name Iron Sun. Love Mel. Love Graham. Love the Kemp. But how on earth can those boys work at the level of those Motown singers that showed them how it's done? None of them stands out for me.

Thats my biggest problem with it. Im unconvinced many of them will cope with 8 shows a week in what I assume will be a fairly energetic show

Did I miss the acting bit of the auditions? I won't be fighting anyone for tickets for this, whoever wins. (Well, not unless they script Mel and Graham into it...then we'd be talking!)

So it's someone's actual paid job to copy and paste twitter comments?
Well, thinking about it now, Callum Howells has proven to be a pretty good actor in She Loves Me. So maybe they all auditioned beforehand to get over that bit?.........or maybe not.....

I think this proves conclusively something that I have thought for some time. Anybody can act. Put enough smoke and mirrors round it and poor old Joe Public won't clock a thing. Oh yes, put me in the next Lear and as long as there's a few disco balls and flashy sets I will blag it and await the plaudits. The Knighthood beckons. Move over McKellen, Jacobi et al... there's a new bitch in town

I expect that the finished show is not planned to be an acting-heavy piece of writing (for the boys at least, they're going to have to hire other cast members who will come from a more traditional acting route, they can inject the emotion and pathos and whatnot in there), and they'll doubtless have acting coaches and a director who is skilled at drawing out good performances rather than preferring to work more collaboratively with actors. They can probably tell from the production of the show that the guys involved are able to say words in a way that doesn't sound like a robot trying to have a conversation with a block of wood, and if they can deliver the lyrics of a song convincingly enough then that's at least a third of the battle with seeing if they can deliver dialogue in a way that doesn't make everyone want to hide their heads under their sofa cushions.
I wouldn't say *anybody* can act, I've done enough rounds of the amdram circuit to know there are some who are beyond help, but given the right material and a decent director, most people can act *well enough*.

Matt Thorpe has been in the bottom group each week but deserves to be the lead in this show. He can sing, dance and act. He said played Frankie in the West End Jersey Boys plus one of the leads in American Idiot. He knows what it's like to perform 8 shows a week plus understands the demands of theatre and he does have an insane voice. Sario will be an annoying arrogant Tw*t who all the little girls will fall over themselves for, I think he was NYMT for some time, there is another performer who I believe was in Book of Mormon and I think Alex who didn't go through was also in American Idiot.

Surely the most important skill of a musical theatre performer is how they deal with the fans, autograph hunters and other assorted nutters at the stage door. Has this been assessed in the show selection process?

I'm sure they must have assessed the "acting" side of things somehow, but it would have been nice to see it. Otherwise, they risk finding five winning boys and then having to replace a couple once they got into serious rehearsals. It's not just the "acting", it's the discipline, maintaining fitness, work ethic etc. But I think there's enough of a pool there for them to cast a band and some understudies/alternates. I still think the fixed band line up thing is silly and I'd almost guarantee that the winning five won't necessarily all end up in the show.Which I'm still not convinced has been written. Surely they would be casting to specific roles if so? Such as The Cute One, The Dancer, The Songwriter Who Can't Dance, The Rebel, etc. Those types aren't consistent across all the bands. Messy old format. I was sorry to see Alexis and Freddy go.

A couple left in the heats didn't they. It was glossed over with "xxxx has decided he didn't want to carry on with the competition, so we've dragged back yyyy who we spent five minutes explaining why he wasn't good enough two weeks ago"

Messy old format. I was sorry to see Alexis and Freddy go. Spot on. Completely agree. Any skeletons boogied out of any cupboards yet for example? Deaglan Arthurs (the Irish lad who sang New York, New York as his audition song) had a story about him in one of the tabloids the other week - his dad was an IRA terrorist. Deaglan went out of the competition in the first week when the lads were singing as bands, with famous singers, so before the public vote stage. I agree about the acting. In previous Casting shows, the judges mentioned it a lot, and rightly so. It seems odd that nothing has been mentioned on this show. Another issue is that we haven't been given a chance to get to know the contestants on this show - I'm still struggling with some of the names, and we're only a week from the final! A final problem - we don't know anything about the musical, except that it's about a boyband and will feature Take That songs. In the previous Casting shows, we were familiar with the musicals and the roles we (the public) were supposed to be casting. We don't have that with LIS, so it's all a bit vague.

Matt's really unliveable though and not very attractive when he sings sometimes. I suppose that's only noticeable with cameras on him though.

Bit of twittering about the editing of the Lady Gaga song to 'remove' LGBT references...missed last night...anyone who saw it feel that was a deliberate thing, or just some of the slapdash song editing they've been doing anyway?
Back to the acting thing, at a guess I'd imagine the 'band' will mainly just have to act like they're in a band, being 'lads' having fun and hanging out having fun...with a bit of angst/arguing/love mixed in, nothing too taxing. Also just because they haven't shown it doens't mean they didn't audition that bit somehow...I mean it's not going to be King Lear level acting anyway so I'm cautiously optimistic it'll be alright...

One of the panel last night referred to it as a touring musical. Not having followed it from day one is this a change because that to me makes it sound like an officially improved version of Never Forget
