The Importance of Being Ernest has been attempted before but with the right songs could work superbly.
The Usual Suspects or American Beauty ( okay I'm a Spacey fan).
Dick Tracy - has that been tried.
Thelma and Louise sprang to mind.

The Amazing Mr Blunden was one of my favourite films as a child I love that film! I don't know why it's so forgotten compared to The Railway Children, from the same team. Mark Kermode and a few others - I think the League of Gentlemen lot - are fans and flag it up when it has one of its rare TV outings. As a kid, I particularly appreciated the closing titles where all the cast - including the baddies - wave goodbye, because the film itself was actually quite scary. |

An adaptation of GIRL, INTERRUPTED featuring music by P!nk.
An adaptation of WORKING GIRL featuring music by Gwen Stefani and No Doubt.
An adaptation of 500 DAYS OF SUMMER featuring music by ELO.
And adaptation of DUMBO featuring music by Cher.
I also imagine it would be easy to throw in an extra song or two and put LA LA LAND and MOULIN ROUGE! on stage.

The Wendy Craig sitcom BUTTERFLIES could be adapted for stage. It is about a woman who is a loving wife and mother and terrible homemaker who is on the verge of having a brief encounter with an equally kindly and despondent local businessman.
Bittersweet it is, and still has a lot of relevant commentary about women's roles.
And it comes tailor made with a theme song by Dolly Parton.

Dorothy! A new musical of the life, affairs, torment and tragedy of the diva Dorothy Squires who a major star in the 1950's. Her marriage to Roger Moore and her refusal to let him go. Using the songs she had hits with such as "Till", "My Way" "I'm walking behind you".
In 1973 she was charged with high kicking a taxi driver who tried to throw her out of his cab. In 1974 her Bexley mansion burned down, from which she escaped with her dog and all her love letters from Roger Moore. She then moved into a house in Bray which flooded three weeks later.
By 1982 she had been banned from the High Court, and had spent much of her fortune on legal fees. Her litigiousness was so excessive that, on 5 March 1987, the High Court declared her to be a "vexatious litigant", preventing her from commencing any further legal actions without the permission of the Court. In 1988 following bankruptcy proceedings she lost her home in Bray, to which she returned the following night to recover her love letters from Moore. Her last concert was in 1990, to pay her poll tax.
Squires was provided with a home in South Wales by a fan, Esme Coles. Squires retired there a recluse, and died in 1998 of lung cancer, aged 83
It is reported that when terminally ill, Roger Moore went to see Dorothy and on being told of his visit, she opened her eyes, said "that's all right then" and passed away. (Orchestra rises to a crescendo of "Say it with flowers". The curtain falls)

The Wicker Man - The 1970s film is dark, weird and already has some cracking tunes in it.
Letter To Brezhnev - I could imagine Sheridan Smith as Teresa (played by Margi Clarke in the film)
Dancing Through The Dark (aka Stags & Hens) - Based on the Willy Russell penned film, which already contains some songs.
Joe Meek - The 1960s music producer who brought the world Telstar and eventually descended into madness.

I wonder if Working Girl will be moved to the present or kept as a period piece? It has potential as a musical although I'm not sure if Cyndi Lauper is the right composer for it, it would be great if they could have Let The River Run in there as it's such a great song.

If not mentioned already, The Breakfast Club or Planes, Trains and Automobiles The Breakfast Club would work superbly as it is set fairly much in a couple of rooms in the school, the film cast was only about 8 characters so you are talking maybe 7 max on stage so overheads would not be high. If they could get rights to the original soundtrack, put the best of that with some new songs then it would be an interesting idea as all the characters had their own back story and they could all have a song each to cover this. The John Hughes film back catalogue could throw up some good ideas. |
