Can I jump in to say I'm very pleased for Raymond Douglas Davies (I told you 3 years ago how terrific "Sunny Afternoon" is!) and Katherine Patricia Routledge. I hope the Queen is up and about for their investiture. Happy 2017, everyone!

Was very pleased about Patricia Routledge, Mark Rylance, Ray Davies, Bryn Terfel and of course Doddy!
I don't have a problem with people accepting (or not); sometimes it is just a reflection of the impact of a career - although I agree that sportsmen and women may be honoured a little too early when compared with their counterparts in entertainment and theatre.

Interesting to see that HMQ obviously wasn't too annoyed about King Charles III as both Piggot-Smith and Rupert Goold got gongs.

I'd say I'd anything its the other way around, people in entertainment get recognised far too early. Sir Mark Rylance, i mean really?!
Sportsmen and woman have a much shorter career length, many retiring in their 30s or earlier depending on their sport. plus for many the Olympics is the pinnacle of their respective sport and that only comes around every 4 years. Id say the sports ones are more than justified.
I like the honours on the whole, especially in a world obsessed with talentless celebrities its nice that the country recognises talent and hard work. yes there are a few issues (party donors etc) but it would be sad if they didn't exist

The people who deserve honours are those who continue to support and work for their sport, community etc as time goes on. It could be paid employment as coaches or regulation committees but some idea of going over and above is what justifies an honour. Same with theatre folk I think. One that amuses me is Ken Dodd who fulfils the old codger award this time. But his reaction was heartfelt and sweet unlike Andy M whose reaction didn't come up to the usually good standard PR statement. But in in the end you can't measure inspiration, can you?

I'm sure I read somewhere (on some list) that he had turned down a knighthood? Same list also said SRB had turned one down which if also untrue means he has been scandalously overlooked again! I DEMAND to see Sir SRB! Love the annual clamour on here to want to see the establishment offer SRB a knighthood so he can tell them to do one again. I'm on board with that one

Am I the only one surprised and slightly scathing about Rylance taking a gong from a Govt he presumably objects to after making such a thespy fuss about the RSC taking oil sponsorship? Oh no, the famous republican anti-war campaigner Sir David Hare explained it very carefully to all us stupid people who accused him of hypocrisy when he accepted his knighthood from Blair - you see the award wasn't for him personally at all, it was for the profession as a whole so he magnanimously and generously accepted on behalf of them all. Wasn't Blair who controversially gave Saville a Gong?

I’m surprised it’s taken this long for Barry Gibb to be knighted.

No damehood for Petula Clark again it seems .But Dame Darcey Bussell at half her age! oh well! People have to be nominated to even be considered for it, and then choose whether to accept it, so who knows, maybe she has been offered it previously and decided she didn't want it, or she simply hasn't been put forward for consideration.

Julie Walters needs to become a dame, I think it's bad how she hasn't become one yet. She's got a CBE so Dame is next one up. Also SO shocked how Celia Imrie hasn't got an MBE. She's appeared in loads of good films and less famous actresses have got an MBE over her. Same goes for Julia Mackenzie - surprised she isn't OBE. Also thought Kelley Hawes was deserving of an OBE after her stunning and dramatic performances in Line of Duty and The Missing. Anyway so glad Naomie Harris got an OBE!! Such an underrated actress who is amazing. Hope to see her continue in James Bond as well as more films and stage roles! I’m a fan of the honours system. Dame Julie won’t happen for at least another 3 years. She got her CBE 2 years ago and there’s normally at least a 5 year wait between awards.

Did you miss Julie Walters becoming a Dame in the Birthday Honours back in June? The cast of Mamma Mia 2 sang 'There is nothing like a Dame' to her on set!

My recent highlights have been Sir Matt Bourne, Dame Julie Walters and Sir Antony Gormely. Big fan of all their work.
Just want Dame Imelda now.

Read Dame Julie but was thinking Dame Imelda. Re-read post I wrote but replace Julie with Imelda. That was point I was trying to make. Lesson learnt - don’t update when you’ve had a few!
