So far have to say I am underwhelmed, as most of their artistic programme has been leaked via Baz.
However great news that People, Plances and Things is transferring to New York and touring, one of the greatest plays I have seen.

We will be getting two film adaptations in the same theatre a month apart..... Two American film adaptations. To follow three American plays ( Ugly Lies the Bone, Millennium Approaches, Perestroika), one American musical ( Follies) and whatever other American shows are to be announced this morning. I wouldn't be surprised to see them announce a transfer to the Lyttelton of Long Day's Journey into Night which will tick three NT boxes, being: 1) an American play, 2) a transfer from Bristol Old Vic, and 3) directed by former NT Director Richard Eyre. Their obsession with American culture is very tedious. No mention at all of the previously announced Antony & Cleopatra with Fiennes - I wonder if it's still on. |

Most of their artistic programme? He didn't leak Anne-Marie Duff's casting in Common or that Macbeth would be happening, he didn't leak John or Saint George And The Dragon, he didn't leak The Majority or Beginning, or a bunch of other info. He's leaked Pinocchio before now and he leaked Network last night, but those are by no means "most of their artistic programme".  |

Not sure quite what to make of Network. Would be great to see Bryan Cranston on stage, but the film is such a classic that I wonder if the play could feel more than a nice cover. I wonder if they're planning to update it much to reflect the current American political situation. Cranston's certainly been quite vocal against Trump.
I don't think I've seen any 'play-of-the-film' before. Any examples where the play of a classic film brings something different and new enough to make it stand alongside the original?

Oh cool. It's been a while since I saw it but iirc festen felt fairly 'theatrical' to begin with; mostly set in a single house, sticking to the paired down dogme style and whatnot... Glad to hear though that this could work out well. Fingers crossed. Although I suspect the rush on ticket day for this will make Angels In America seem like a stroll in the park. |

From a accessibility point of view it is great that Entry Pass is doubling the number of tickets and whilst I won't book everything in this season there's some jaw dropping casting in the form of Bryan Cranston, which has been my biggest criticism of Norris reign, and some strong British talent across all the theatres. The whitewashing of the Fiennes' Cleopatra is concerning but it might be delayed rather than cancelled entirely.
Sadly the National does need American plays, as good a state as British playwrighting is, it needs revivals and shows it can market as (already) successful but it is a shame with such a thriving fringe scene that no such adaptations from pub theatre to national seem to happen.

I had assumed he was playing Antony, but of course you are right given the current NT approach. Maybe he has a better-paying film to make. However historically productions of A&C have been cancelled quite often and always because they are hard to cast, in this case maybe they couldn't find a Cleopatra to play opposite the old charisma-free thesp. |

Ivo van Hove has done a few - eg Antonioni project, Scenes from a Marriage at the Barbican a couple of years ago, and Obsession coming up this year |

So, will Angels in America be extended at the NT???
In the new brochure (up to July) there's a big hole for a new Lyttelton show to preview in mid-June and then play in rep in July. But nothing has been announced today for the Lyttelton until Network in November.
So Angels in America may be planned to play through to October or November?
Partially recast, with Denise Gough off to America with People, Places and Things, (shunning the UK tour).
