One of those rare and amazing booking opening days... 4 browsers open... 3 at 1200 to 1600 in line... one of them "it is your turn" dead on 8.30am! "Downstate" front row duly booked  . One browser open, 800-ish in line, wait only about twenty minutes, also bought a front-row ticket to 'Downstate'... and then noticed there's an evening performance of 'Follies' on the day I'm seeing 'Downstate' (at the matinee) with front-row seats available. It would have been rude not to buy one, so I'm now in for a double dose of collapse-of-the-American-dream misery. |

Likewise, no issues even though only joined the queue at 8:45, cheap central Row D seats for Tartuffe and Top Girls, and front row for Downstate.
Even managed to pick up a cheap row C for Follies.
Overall a good mornings ticket buying.

Then it's the alternative stress of looking for a return or braving Friday Rush.

Downstate was the only production in which I was interested but it wasn't worth the hassle just for that; besides, I'd prefer now to wait for the running time (been caught out too often with a short matinee or long evening) & some early reports. Then it's the alternative stress of looking for a return or braving Friday Rush.
The running time for 'Downstate' is 2 hours 25 minutes including an intermission, according to the Steppenwolf website (it's the same production that's coming to the National): Steppenwolf Theatre - Downstate
For what it's worth, in terms of word of mouth, reviews are good and a friend who saw it in Chicago (and whose taste I trust) messaged me afterwards to tell me to try and see it in London because it was the best thing he'd seen all year.

A fairly painless ticket buying experience this morning and getting everything I wanted. I’m curious about the staging of Downstate. I’ve picked up a Row A ticket in the pit area but it said side view. As the stage layout on the seat selection is a traditional layout, I’m not too sure what they mean. Though for £28 I thought it was a bargain and too good a seat price not to pick it.
As an extra bonus, I completely forgot about a credit note I had, so after applying it, it certainly helped the bank balance this morning.

The site definitely says restricted view which is fair enough. Maybe I was seeing things that where not there in for a side view notice. I’ve checked my online account for any further info about the ticket. That says RV as well. |

I did a theatre studies course at Birkbeck College back in the 90s and Kenneth Cranham came in to talk about his role in Flight. He was very entertaining and I remember him saying that(at that time) everyone was on Equity minimum . He said he even had to pay for parking. He said he enjoyed working at the National as there was six weeks rehearsals but he couldn't afford it too often. He struck me as a really nice guy.

Isn't there an exchange agreement with Equity? We send them British actors and we get the same number of American ones back?
Did I dream that?
I admit to not being familiar with this guy, but wikipedia tells me he has won a couple of Tony awards - one for drama, one for musical theatre - so presumably he's pretty good.

Very excited to see Denis O'Hare! He's been in 5 seasons of American Horror Story, and he's one of the best things in it every time. His transgender bartender, Liz Taylor, in "AHS: Hotel" is my favourite appearance of his, but his villainous liar/kidnapper/murderer in "AHS: Freak Show" suggests how wonderfully hilariously camp and deceitful his Tartuffe will be. This is brilliant casting. |

He’s got a lot of stage experience (including a number of musicals, like Assassins and Sweet Charity, which is where I first noticed him). I think that it was his stage work that led to his great TV roles. |
