Aside from Angels/Follies - Consent in the Dorfman appeals. I enjoyed the last two productions in the Dorfman and really like the space so will give it a try.

I absolutely echo that. I would also love to see a stunning production of Wild Duck and a completely new, refreshed, rejuvenated, modern version of West Side Story (similar to what was done to Carousel or Oklahoma).

The problem with West Side Story is the rights holders will not allow any production of it that doesn't preserve the original choreography and staging so it would be very constraining for any director.


It is almost a tradition that a "house dramatist" at NT doesn't get much of a look in under the next regime with the obvious exception of Sir David Hare who seems to be a fixture at the place (except when Trevor Nunn dropped him and Hare filled the newspapers with his whining). So I expect Sir David will have another treat for us next year.

Anything by Tennessee Williams is good - we're getting The Glass Menagerie.

He also had the three Young Chekov plays there last year. The number of plays he has had staged at NT is approaching 20. I suppose Shakespeare has had more but no-one else comes close. One of his more amusing complaints when Nunn took over was "I don't even know him".

I know the miserablist Norris won't do it but NT should assemble a top cast and do one of the best Feydeau farces.

I'd forgotten that but it was a backdoor appearance as a transfer of a successful show from Chichester Festival Theatre which cleverly swerved the NT's need to produce its own successful classical drama.

As Jan echoed on here - Trevor Nunn wanted to do West Side Story, but couldn't get the rights, for one reason or another. However with Follies being done this season, it is very unlikely West Side Story will happen. Saying that I would have thought that West Side Story would have been done better at Chichester, they should just bring over the glorious and critically acclaimed Broadway''s 2008 production with Spanish dialogue. this would 99% transfer to the West End.

And there I was trying to work out which Gallagher brother would be better playing Jimmy Porter! 

Plays on my wish list would include The Relapse - which I can imagine being absolutely joyous (with the right cast and high production values), Murder in the Cathedral (which I think is ripe for a modern production), Separate Tables (I know Rattigan was done to death so to speak recently - but this one didn't get a major revisiting)

I thoroughly enjoyed Andromache when Cheek by Jowl toured it in French a few years back - it still stands out as one of my all-time favourite productions. Would Racine (or Corneille) work in a great English translation? Only the National or RSC could try it.

I would very much like to see Don't Look Back in Anger, a play to take us into the New Year 😉

Last February, the first show programmed by Tamara Harvey as the new artistic director of Theatr Clwyd was Robert Hastie's production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, with Catrin Stewart, which toured to two other venues after playing a month at home.

Good Lord, what is she playing? The roof? Dreadful actress.
