No surprise there, was kind of the obvious next choice but I always enjoy seeing a good Dick.

Being irish, this is the only panto I have never seen as it's never done in Ireland! Look forward to seeing it. The charector on the poster reminds me of Amanda Holden, is it just me?? Does this mean she is back next year?

I think Dick Whittington was my first ever panto and I'm sure it was a woman playing Dick. Hope they keep it like that but I doubt they will and I was very young so may be mistaken.

John Barrowman is Dick in Birmingham this year and he's actually very good. If he were cast I wouldn't be disappointed.

Obvious choice of panto for the Palladium - I was surprised they didn't do it this year, TBH. It'll be interesting to see who they cast.

Was discussing this at work and we decided that the next two pantos that had the scale and would suit the Palladium would be Dick Whittington and Peter Pan (Snow White too small, Sleeping Beauty to similar to Cinderella, Robin Hood/Babes in the Woods too regional and out of fashion, Jack + Beanstalk too small (wheres your big tap number in that), Aladdin already on in town). I thought Peter Pan would be first as thought Qdos would use it as an excuse to build a big new one when they have a decent big Dick in Birmingham (easy Grandma) and very few Peters out this year.

I wonder if the National/Bristol Old Vic's production of Peter Pan prevented Qdos doing the panto Peter Pan happening this year although that's a play, it's too confusing from a marketing point. I've never seen Robin Hood or Babes in the Wood but why are considered too regional? I'm not sure if Qdos has the rights to it but Robinson Crusoe could work at the Palladium although I've not seen it so don't know the scale of it

Given how well Cinderella has sold this year (near enough a sell out!) I'm intrigued to see how they price Dick.

Generally it depends which position you choose to experience it from. Don't forget a group booking will often help lower the cost as well.

I think the reason they didn't do Snow White was for the dwarf issue with Qdos and the reason they didn't do Aladdin was because of the musical. It seems weird to go from the biggest pantomime of all, Cinderella, to a smaller and less liked one, Dick Whittington.
Still I look really forward to some good casting here!!

Booked in for the first performance looks like it's doing a week less next year, but 2 shows every day (I think there's some 1-show days this time) so probably a similar number of performances overall.

Thanks for that tip theatremonkey - booked! A punishing 4 weeks of 12 shows a week though. A shorter run - so saving the QDOS a weeks theatre hire with I suspect the same number of performances. I hope the artists agents demand huge money - that's a tough gig!

Cilla Black was given 150,000 for her Liverpool panto so big names are all on 20, 30 and 40k a week. It's a very lucrative job for a month over Christmas!

Not so lucrative for the ensemble though - still doing 12 shows a week or the none names in big roles who still do 12 shows a week for nothing like that cash!

Yes stars get a lot. I was told whilst working for one of the biggest producers that a certain US panto regular would get £70k a week. Their panto would make a loss, but they worked as a loss leader, with people coming back year after year. The 80s sitcom star on mine was on a meager £20k a week. Obviously they get a plush hotel room thrown in and that, I lived with a crazy old lady in an ice cold house with her and her 15 cats... (I exaggerate, but only slightly) and that came out of my weekly, which was barely more than I could normally expect for on a per show basis it was substantially less!

David H!
Theatre and Pantomime are two nouns that don't belong together, what a waste to a glorious theatre, the Americans must have as laughing stock.

I think we all know that Carrie Hope Fletcher should Dick with Danielle Hope as Alice (Danielle's done it in Birmingham this year) and Kerry Ellis should be Fairy Bowbells with Victoria Hamilton-Barritt as Queen Rat
