Watching (or suffering) the Ball and Boe special at the moment. What were they thinking doing an album and tour together; their voices don't go together at all. In any case, it has made me even more determined to stay away from the 'experience' of hearing him sing Billy Bigelow's 'Soliloquy'.

It was absolutely horrendous and totally ruined what was a relatively enjoyable hour. Though Morecambe & Wise they were NOT. |

It was soooooooo cheesy..... almost embarrassing.
The section 'at the bar' discussing their previous roles?? cringe...
And a total waste of Maria Friedman's talents.
I like them and their voices seperately, but together? no thanks.
Anyone else seen it??

Yes, they really need to skip the cheesy repartee and just get on with the singing. (Although having seen them live the other day, when they go off-script and things get a bit risque, there are some genuine laughs to be had.) Though not sharing others' reverence for Mr Sondheim, I must admit I found the Chitty bit quite amusing anyway.
Boe's voice sounded a lot less operatic to me when I heard him recently (though it is still a beautiful, strong instrument, in my opinion). My first impression was that Ball was totally outclassed vocally...but then, his acting through the songs was far stronger, of course. Fantastic Gethsemane.
And FWIW, when Boe sang Bring Him Home, all the hip young things doing FOH gathered at the side of the auditorium to watch, totally spellbound.

Utterly dreadful. Their voices do not blend at all and Ball outclassed by Boe vocally. Why did they do this? Where did it come from? It's like a bargain basement 3 Tenors! I suppose it's quite lucrative for them. Michael Ball for London Palladium Panto next year?
I understand the tour has sold very well though - no doubt the Ball fans out in force!

I'm inclined to agree, sadly. Their voices didn't blend well, and, whilst I can see that the whole competitive banter thing might be funny live, it just seemed too obvious.

Nah, it's obvious live, too, but goes down well with a certain section of fans who like to see them more as naughty little boys than grown men.
And hey, if it sells, where's the harm, really? There are plenty of people hawking far worse.
They do seem to have a genuine affection for each other, though - it shone through in the unscripted live bits. Which, after that many tour dates, is probably impressive in itself!
I tend to agree I prefer a tenor and baritone together, to highlight the colours of musical passages better. But it was a good night out - I felt it was worth the £50 ticket price, and I rarely pay that for any show these days. The TV show, however, less so!

A friend of mine sent me a text saying "Ball and Boe look like the world's worst boyband"
I only saw one song- I've recorded it- I'm expecting a cheese-fest I love some Balls less keen Boe. But as jeanhunt says, what's the harm? a friend (not a particular fan) saw the tour and loved it- had it been cheaper I'd have gone.

The Bond medley in the live show was great - they'd have been far better doing that on the TV show than the cringe-y career bit, if only because everybody loves Bond music.
Even replicating the swing section would have been better - I'm not big on that type of music at all, and in fact rolled my eyes a bit when they announced from the stage they'd be doing that stuff. But their voices really gelled on those songs, they seemed more relaxed and because they (the songs) are a bit cheesy anyway, you didn't notice the cheese quite as much in the performances.

I thought this was silly, and a missed opportunity. I don't really like their voices together; as I said when they appeared on Strictly. The only bit I liked was the Les Mis bit at the end. Though it would have served them right if Maria Friedman had come back on to sing Supercalifragiliciousexpealidocious over it.

Am I the only one who quite enjoyed the TV show? Ok, yes, it was extremely cheesy. But I quite like a bit of cheese now and again.
The Chitty/Being Alive bit made me laugh - in part because I knew many Sondheim fans would consider it 'sacrilege!' and most of the non-MT-fan telly audience would never have heard Being Alive before, and have no idea of the reverence in which it is held by the Sondheim faithful (and, indeed, who Maria Friedman is), so the joke would have pretty much gone other their heads.
So it was a weirdly audacious theatre-geek in-joke.

I enjoyed the tour but the TV was awful and all the tv lead up spots like strictly. I was quite worried but had a fun night.

Saw the tour twice, Brighton and London Palladium, it was a joy, a delight, a really lovely evening (both times). Wasn't thrilled with the TV show but the fans I saw on Facebook were lapping it up. Missed the live streaming goddammit, only caught the last song! Great evenings entertainment.
Alfie Boe clearly outsings Michael Ball, but both have good voices - and the live Bond medley was a highlight.
And yes I've bought for next years tour - not the summer dates, but December 2017, at the O2 and Bournemouth.

Hoping they add some dates in smaller venues as I know my mum was vexed to miss the London dates this year (eg London 02 a nightmare to get to, Hammersmith Apollo much better).

Sadly they're back there again this tour. |

They got the (album) Christmas number 1!
It has sold nearly half a million with 98% those physical copies rather than downloads which tells u everything u need to know about their fans - low wifi connected areas/prisoners
