It's Michelle Collins last show tomorrow. Shame she's leaving but Claire Sweeney will be good, she starts on Wednesday. Seeing the show later on in the year so I see: Jason Manford, Claire Sweeney and Phil Jupitas. Looking forward to this cast, would've liked to have seen Michelle though as I loved her in Coronation Streer and she doesn't usually do musical theatre. I like Claire in Hairspray though so it's swings and roundabouts.

I loved this in Wimbledon this week. Superb show for a tour. Great energy and lots of fun.
Glad they got rid of the child catcher song but didn't think much of Truly's new song. Not memorable and didn't go anywhere. (on that note Carrie needs to lose 10kg - she looked like a headmistress rather than a leading lady, but sang beautifully).
I'm glad Michelle Collins is leaving she was really the only weak link, a real bubblegum panto performance waving her arms in the air and a dodgy accent. To think of all the musical performers who would have been better. I'm sure Square Cleeny will be better.
Try and see it. Great evening overall.

I've just realised, after looking through her bio, that I've seen Charlotte Wakefield in Regent's Park's Sound of Music and she was excellent in that!

I'm not sure if you are just looking for a reaction or attention West End Wendy or are just incredibly rude, but who are you to tell someone else that they need to lose 10kg? That is purely subjective and is highly personal opinion / comment. It's not "I didn't like her voice" or I preferred 'x's interpretation...it is an attack on her physical appearance....especially when every other Truly has had a certain teacher-like quality anyway! Poor show... quote author=" westendwendysource="/post/43450/thread" timestamp="1469800153"]I loved this in Wimbledon this week. Superb show for a tour. Great energy and lots of fun. I didn't want to start any arguments, but I totally agree danb. I don't think commenting on an actor's appearance in that way is really appropriate.
With regards to Charlotte Wakefield. I think she's been fab in loads of stuff. I loved her in the Oklahoma tour, and she was also part of the OLC Spring Awakening. I'm sure she'll be great in this too.

Only just read that, and I agree with both danb and talkstageytome . I think it's not a secret that I'm not exactly Carrie's biggest fan, but seriously? Overweight? I think her weight is just, well, normal, and she's neither skinny nor chubby.

How dare you shame someone for their weight! I cant stand this kind of mentality. Carrie has a healthy, normal body size, who are you to tell her to lose weight?!

I'm sorry everyone but weight does matter. End of. It's casting and you have to face up to that. In certain shows people have been called into the creative team office for putting on/losing too much weight. The fat content of a character changes who they are actually meant to be. It's not personal it's a fact of showbusiness. You wouldn't get a stick thin Tracy in Hairspray, an obese Kim in Siagon, you wouldn't get a chubby Oliver Twist and I don't think a size 12/14 truly scrumptious is ideal either. M Unlike many countries the UK is over sensitive about the acceptance of weight (especially women), I will bet 1000 pounds the producers and creative team have either been worried or have said something. Not to be cruel but because that's the truth. She has a sensational voice but the extra weight in my opinion changed her character from the dainty lead to a rather headmistress horse racer type person. That's neither good or bad - it's just not what the part is.

westendwendy your original post: "Glad they got rid of the child catcher song but didn't think much of Truly's new song. Not memorable and didn't go anywhere. (on that note Carrie needs to lose 10kg - she looked like a headmistress rather than a leading lady, but sang beautifully)" You make no mention of the character regarding her weight. You make a comment directed at Carrie and her weight. You said she looks more like headmistress rather than a leading lady, that is a clear dig at Carrie's weight and not a comment on the character itself. Which is not on. I respect that it may not of been your intention to offend, but the way you worded your initial comment is possibly the reason that it caused a backlash. What you needed to do was say something like maybe Carrie isn't the right body type for this role. But you made no attempt at this in your initial comment. You merely said she does not look like a leading lady. Which implies you mean this simply based on the weight of the actress and not the characterisation of the role.

That's neither good or bad - it's just not what the part is. Nonsense. There's no requirement for Truly to look like anything. She just has to look scrumptious - its about a character, not a body shape - and Carrie conveys the chracter perfectly well. Otherwise Truly looks like a female. No requirement for any particular shape, one leg , or Jessica Ennis's body, at all. Carrie looks like a normal female. Most roles are for normal females. Thats what a normal female looks like. its also what most actors would look like in those country lady clothes, and wearing multiple layers of costume. Some roles require specific looks and abilities, most don't. Christines need to look like ballet dancers, and ideally not 30, Eponines need to look as if meals and care have been lacking - though the UK equivalent these days would often be massive. If you want people to perform gymnastic dance routines, you will tend to end up with people who often look like classic dancers - but thats no reason for every role to have one cast in it. Certainly no reason to suggest that someone a normal shape isn't, or worse to, irresponsibly, suggest to hundreds of thousands of her followers, that they need to look like stick insects.

Exactly djp^
And in what world is a size 12 considered 'overweight' anyway? Overweight is to do with health, not aesthetics.
The points about Kim, Oliver and Tracy don't really hold much weight either, as their weights are defined by their circumstances and/or define their characters. There is nothing about Truly, a young woman in the early 1900s and the daughter of a wealthy sweet factory owner for that matter, which suggests she should be any particular size or appearance.
Sorry westendwendy I do think you're just being rude. I don't normally like to engage in arguments online, but this is just meansprited nastiness. I'm no Carrie Hope Fletcher superfan, but I'd gladly stand up for any woman or man being needlessly picked on because of the way they look. Not that I think there's anything at all wrong with the way she looks... a sentiment echoed my the majority on this board by the looks of things.

Well if I was an agent with a young female leading talent that was a size 12/14 I would tell her to lose weight.
Casting directors cast size 8/10 or size 16/18. I'm really not being nasty or horrible, as someone who works in the profession I'm simply making a statement that is true. For some reason, the PC British society doesn't like it when it's the social norm for women in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Russia, Asia to only be thin.
This is a profession of pigeon holes/stereo types. We the audience judge everyone! Madonna too old, Kelly Clarkson too much weight, Katie Price too much Botox, various West End actors this and that.
In drama schools if you are a size 12/14 they would you to lose weight and that is a fact. Please understand this people. This is not personal or meant to be rude - just a reality of casting and musical theatre.

Ok I came here to offer thoughts on the actual show but...
Firstly before anyone points it out yes I have previously commented on things that Carrie has said or done that slightly irritated me BUT how dare you comment on her weight in that manner. Firstly, as far as I can tell she's the same size as when she was in Les Miz. Second whose business is it if she isn't? thirdly, how dare you. Fourthly where is it written that Truly is 5'8'' and skinny? and lastly how dare you.
Going back to Carrie outside her acting, what is very passionate about is promoting healthy mind and body attitudes in young girls, for which I applaud her. In fact she even did a vlog on healthy body image a while back. So if she were to see this and vlog in response I'd be the first in line to applaud her for that too.
Right. Breathe.
The show. Firstly there's a thing about seeing a show like Chitty for the first time as an adult having never seen the film. Yeah, it's really not for me. I didn't 'get' it at all. That said it's a lovely production, really slick, well put together and an excellent cast. Carrie and Lee are excellent in the leads, Claire Sweeney was glorious I thought in a frankly thankless role and Scott and Sam (sorry I forget last names!) as the idiot spies are delightful. The car looks great too, I honestly never knew it was a boat as well...

There's the video I was talking about. And I'd much rather young girls who want to be in theatre have someone who looks like Carrie to look up to than the other images of female beauty they're bombarded with.
Many Musical theatre actresses are of the tall thin/athletic type because chorus roles and many leading roles need strong dancers, and that's the body type that lends itself to success in that area (not always though) however there are many roles both in musicals and plays that it really doesn't matter what the person looks like.
Jason Manford plays Potts on some dates, nobody would dream of saying he's 'Too fat' to play Potts right? (and I'm not saying he is fat, just he's a larger built fella than say Lee!)

I don't often comment, but, although it might have been true 10 years ago that a drama school would tell a student to lose weight that is no longer the norm. Working in one of the top colleges in London I can say that from first hand experience. Students are encouraged to have a healthy life style and are given the tools to make that happen, but never are any students told to lose weight. I think drama and dance colleges have made significant advancement in this area over the last 5-10 years and I am really proud that students are no longer being persecuted for their body shape. I have no right to decide how someone should live their life or what their body looks like. There is still a lot of work that the drama schools can do but to state that all drama schools make their students lose weight is entirely inaccurate.

I'm taking a couple of my children to this on the weekend, one of them specifically a Carrie fan of a few years ago; the other was obsessed with the actual car as a 4/5 year old. I'll listen out for any audience comments about a more matronly Truly. You never know, some of them might be ignorant & out of touch with reality too.
