She is far too emotionally unstable to be on public social media,even before the sad news about her dad. And building a close relationship with her fans has possibly backfired here.
In many jobs though she wouldn't get the time off work so it's not just the producers of Funny Girl. I've worked with a few people and they have gone through parents having cancer and they still go to work and just have some time to help with appointments/care etc

There's a difference between having an office job getting a sad moment and needing a weep in the toilet for a few minutes and going to work standing in front of a 100+ people and having to perform with nowhere to hide.
Yes it isn't good to express your feelings so openly on social media for all to see, but she's not the only person in the world to do so, just unfortunately she has a lot of people reading what she writes.
I'd rather see an understudy than a woman having an emotional meltdown on stage (unless it's part of the show).
At least if she misses shows at the Menier she's 'letting down' a lot less people than letting down over 1000 in the Savoy.

She is 100% correct to miss the shows, however a couple of her now deleted rants on Twitter went to far. You wonder why her management haven't told her to stop using Twitter.

Look, perhaps there is a different benchmark for performers but millions of people, including many of us reading this have had the devastating news that a family member has cancer but have had to carry on with their job . The news itself was not, in my case, considered to be a reason to take time off. The illness was.
If hearing such news prevents a performer from giving their best performance then it's a no brainer. Don't go on. End of. No-one with an ounce of compassion will critisise you for it. But we don't need to see the whole thing played out on line. This is Sheridan's problem.

Menier just tweeted they're taking it a day at a time and Sheridan's out both performances today. They will offer tickets to Savoy to anyone who doesn't want to see show with Natasha.

We saw the show last night & thought Natasha was wonderful as did many people in the audience judging by the comments. She was clearly overwhelmed by the standing ovation she got at the end which was really sweet.
There were lots of gaps in the seating & we were all encouraged to scoot along the rows & fill in empty seats so quite a few people must have taken advantage of rebooking for The Savoy which was a shame.

Will get a chance to compare the two today. Looking forward to seeing Natasha. Will be interesting to see how many empty seats there are. I suspect quite a few at matinee will have been before as originally sold to supporters.

Wonderful afternoon at Menier. Hard to believe it wasn't Sheridan on stage with great performance by Natasha. Similar in looks and mannerisms on stage. Better singer in my opinion albeit not quite the power of Sheridan. Full standing ovation at end. Number of empty seats. They missed a treat. Only criticism was time it took to boost volume on Natasha when singing - seemed to be pre set to Sheridan. Final number was a belter.

Mark Shenton was also there yesterday and tweeted afterwards what a star Natasha is. Also commented on how good Darius Campbell is which I also had failed to spot first time round.

I had tickets for tomorrow that I've exchanged as I was travelling down from Sheffield and it's a lot of time and effort which I don't really want to make if Sheridan isn't on. I totally understand why though, I'm not one of those people who expected replacement tickets I'm actually surprised that they've been offered.

I'm tempted to try to see Natasha tomorrow - I thought she was great in the Union's Chess - but the Menier's 8pm start time is off-putting when one doesn't live in London. It's also pretty expensive for a fringe show that I'm only interested in to see an understudy, rather than the show itself.

Have no intention of changing my booking for closing night. Can't wait to see Natasha to compare and contrast their performances. Shenton's praise was glowing so I have very high hopes. The atmosphere will be electric. I loved Sheridan's performance too.

I saw Natasha the first time she went on as Fanny. It must have been early December when Sheridan was off sick for 2 performances. You could sense an atmosphere in the audience at the beginning as they had come to see Sheridan but by the end of Act 1 they were won over and she, deservedly, got a full standing ovation at the end.
No one can match Sheridan for her comic performance which is perfection but Natasha makes up for it in the singing department.

I went to the last show, and loved it. For me, it's not the 5 star show it is with Sheridan Smith, but it's still a solid 4 star show without her. (1) The laughter test: Laughs are down about 50 percent without the star of the show. Natasha J Barnes has described acting in this show as similar to following the breadcrumbs of Smith's technique, and if there is one thing Barnes has mastered, it's the deadpan reaction, followed by a quick moment of fourth wall breaking insincerity. She got big laughs doing that. Where Barnes can't match Smith is in the moment to moment comedy playing, the alertness and aliveness in every moment that makes Smith so special; (2) The tears test: Barnes comes up a winner here, about equal with Smith for heart-rending moments. Her "People" had an ultra-sensitive tender build-up to a very satisfying emotional outpouring, and my tear ducts answered her call accordingly. She smashed the final three songs, especially "The Music that Makes Me Dance," where the strength of her voice came into it's own; (3) The charisma test: When Sheridan Smith is in the show, she is a magnet to the eye, and I found I couldn't take my eyes off her. There is something so charming and effervescent, vulnerable and alive about her. Removing her from the equation allows others to catch the eye: with Marilyn Cutts's Rose being the most magnetic performer in tonight's show. Everything she did was compelling and true, and Rose's duet with Eddie, "Who taught her everything she knows?" got a massive and well-deserved ovation. Darius Campbell's Nick Arnstein was the second most compelling watch tonight, with his solo number, "Temporary Arrangement," a stand-out, and the little bit of "People" he gets to reprise truly excellent. Natasha J Barnes was, for me, the third most magnetic draw to my eye, and became more and more compelling as the weight of the emotions she was asked to express increased. I'm really glad I got to see her, and I look forward to seeing Sheridan Smith giving her 5 star performance at the Savoy. 4 stars.  |

Was there tonight too and Steve's post nails it.
Have to say that I've adored SS every time I've seen her in FG but removing her does equal out the performances. Thought Natasha held her own with Marilyn, Darius, Joel and the rest of the ensemble who really shone tonight. Also understood what Shenton said about the flashes of a young MsStaunton and heard that incredible warmth and timbre that Garland had.
Disappointed there was no acknowledgement off the entire cast and specifically SS's contribution throughout the run.
Hope all the troubles are ironed out before Savoy.
