With Ryan on this. I think her casting was horrible to begin with. While we are having discussions on Glenn's vocal ability, the difference is that Glenn might not have the best vocals, but her vocals are adequate. Whatever she lacks in singing, she more than makes up in acting and presence. Sheridan Smith on the other hand, is unfortunately totally miscast in this role.

I was also at the press night last night and felt that it has transferred really well from the Menier. Expanded chorus and also band. With more depth to the stage the big production numbers really come into their own. A couple of numbers have been padded out with added dance moves and the end is slightly different. Of course you dont get the intimacy of the Menier but this shows works perfectly on the Savoy stage. Really thrilled about the cast recording being released. I was also lucky enough to go to the after show party which was amazing. Suffering a bit at work this morning though.

I have seen the show at both the menier and savoy and am personally very excited for the cast recording. I don't feel there is a need to make a comparison, it's been 50odd years and they are very different people.
I also on a slightly different note I don't understand why people who don't like the show or the star find the need to come into this thread and basically troll it

Hurrah to the cast recording. Although how many Babs comparisons will this get? SS really is a brave girl for taking this on I'd say foolish. She can get away with it on stage because you're watching the whole performance with it which distracts somewhat from the so-so vocals and if you're impressed by SS then it probably sounds good but just hearing it is just going to emphasise that she just can't sing the score all that well. Particularly if it's a live recording. I suppose if it's a studio recording they'll be able to play around with auto-tuning and such. I'd say "woman".

Although most people including me are raving about her performance, I don't think anyone has picked out her voice as a highlight. I thought she sounded better in Legally Blonde

Although most people including me are raving about her performance, I don't think anyone has picked out her voice as a highlight. I thought she sounded better in Legally Blonde I took a friend to the Menier who has not seen Sheridan perform in a musical before and she said she was extremely impressed with her singing, and not just her belt. The problem at the savoy is the Orchestration which is not brilliant and sometimes her voice (and the rest of the cast at that) are lost in the band. This is not a fault of the performers but is a problem with the producers/directors who during nearly 2 weeks worth of previews haven't seemed to pick this up

Currently: 5* from The Stage and WestEndFrame 4* from WhatsOnStage, Evening Standard and The Telegraph
I simply cannot understand those who think Sheridan Smith is miscast in this role. I hope the view isn't subconsciously altered by her public actions - I really couldn't care less what she tweets, if she's great on stage, that's all I want! I am firmly in the camp that think she was almost born to play this role. Haven't seen the Savoy production yet but did see it at the Menier and I'm glad to hear it's transferred well. Will be making my trip along the Strand soon, I hope!
And re: the cast recording, I'm also over the moon that this is happening. It will be wonderful to hear that glorious band and score recorded with the clarity that new recordings give us. The OBC/OST is fine, but technology when they were recorded can only give you so much. And whilst I prefer the OBC of Legally Blonde, Sheridan Smith is far from offensive to the ears on the OLC, so I don't understand why Funny Girl would be any different. If she can act with her face for the stage (which she can), she can act with her voice for a recording (which I'm sure she can do, too).

I don't think she was miscast at all, and although her voice is nothing like Barbra's, if you don't compare the two its orally fine. I'm excited for this cast album, although I do really hope its a studio recording. Not a fan of the live ones at all.

(Bolding mine) I'd say the very same about Sheridan. And I'd neither say she's miscast.

Definitely not miscast, from my point of view:
She's got the natural ebullience Fanny needs (ie to believably think she's capable of succeeding in a career where usually looks are key) If you follow her on Twitter/read the tabloids, you know she's got an issue with low self-esteem (which Fanny also displays in her vulnerable moments) She has an endearing cheeky quality (which is the key to Fanny's career and success) And she just generally has great stage presence and star quality (which Fanny also needs)
I'm not a fangirl, by the way - I just genuinely think she's talented and consistently does good work.

Agree with all the above, if you look at Sheridan as a person and her career, she is basically Fanny Brice. She's perfect for the role in my opinion

If you compare to Barbra as Funny Girl (with the inevitable filming multi-takes and professional recordings) to Sheridan as Funny Girl - live, there on stage, one take and that's what you get, I would be mystified at anyone thinking this isn't a terrific performance.
Saw it at Menier, booked a few times for Savoy. Will buy the Cast Recording.

There's no way she's miscast. She totally has it nailed from 'well hello gorgeous'. Sings like a dream, comic timing second to none.
Saw it twice at the menier and will be at the Savoy in 4 weeks.

Based on the performances I've seen Sheridan is a much better singer than Glenn Close and her vocals perfect in the role.

Really enjoyed this last night - like Alec, I was a little worse for wear this morning after one hell of a party.
It's transferred really, really well. Bigger show, brassier band and an incredible leading lady. She really nailed it last night!
What with this, Guys and Dolls and Show Boat all on at the same time; Revival audiences are really in for a treat!

Will the recording be Live or Studio? I adore the news about the recording. I'm thrilled! Perhaps if if anyone meets her at stage door they could pose this question and report back? I for one, would like to know, a studio recording just has a certain quality to it.

Sheridan seems very emotional at Curtain Call last night, bless her!

Well that article is wrong for a start. It says she pulled out of several "preview performances" last month. They were not previews, it was at the end of the run at the Menier.

Why does every article on the Mail seem to spend half the time referring to the "sex appeal" or "slender figure" of individuals, then spending many words on the dress sense? Admittedly Sheridan is attractive but do we need them to force that fact on us..? I presume it's to get keywords in for more links from google.
I'm glad the production is going well - I wonder if this'll be another Savoy production which will end up being recorded..
