I went during the first few weeks and I didn’t enjoy it much. However, it would be interesting to have gone now in the run instead as when I went the audience were too over the top too and laughed at every single line/movement and clapped at everything. I felt very uncomfortable and out of place - some parts were funny but it seemed like they were laughing at every single thing. This really did add to my disenjoyment that evening, as well as the fact I couldn’t invest in the show at all

I went last Thursday matinee, and was dreading the audience reaction as described above, and I was ready to rip up my gay card, but actually it was an audience enjoying the show for what it was and as it happened. A very civilised audience. Us gays have been known to ruin a show for other people, in so many ways, and that embarrasses me. We should hand in the gender card, the how many times have we seen the show card, and the my friend in the company card, when we enter the auditiorium.

A proper joy to go back again tonight. It’s literally been 3 weeks since I last went but this show just keeps delivering. Rosalie is just fantastic, and I love almost everything about it - Another Hundred People for me doesn’t work well enough, and I don’t think George is a good enough actor. But holy cow, I am more blown away by Patti LuPone every single time I see her perform. She is just unbelievable. The Ladies who Lunch scene, and the moments that follow, are utterly genius. She really does bring something so incredibly special to it and I can’t get enough.
GO AND SEE THIS SHOW BEFORE IT LEAVES US.

I didn't really get what was so good about Patti Lupone, I have to say. I've never seen her before although obviously I know the name. I couldn't always hear her lyrics clearly, and every little thing she did seemed to draw disproportionate applause. And the Ladies who Lunch song didn't resonate nearly ad much as many of the others with me.

God how lucky, apparently, I was to go to both Company and The Inheritance, twice, and just get pretty standard West end audiences if a bit younger than average.
No one preening, no 'wendies', no one wanting to be seen just an audience enjoying it, or not, on their own terms.
Shocking.

Agree - first time I went audience were primed and were borderline hysterical. It was ABSOLUTELY over-hyped. Like Hamilton. The Wendies having decided it was amazing before they even stepped through the door. Actually can make it difficult to just take in the piece when you feel like an outsider in the club. Still, I found there was much to enjoy and booked again for February on GILT. You can add me to the list of people relieved that the audience has become more 'regular.' I hope this happens sometime at Hamilton so I can check that out again. I am pleased I am not the only one who has felt alienated from the rest of the audience in a WE theatre recently. I am a gay man but just loathed the gay West End Wendies around me both at this and The Inheritance. Preened, plucked and polished determined to be "seen" and heard. I suspect it took them all afternoon to get ready! Greeting acquaintances as long lost relatives in the foyer blocking the space. No wonder I am single as on occasions like this I hate 90% of gay men!
Sadly I can so relate to what you're describing...

Glad it’s not just me who finds the only disappointing thing about this performance is Another Hundred People - normally one of the high points. It has tightened up since previews and Bobbie is now less ... cool/detached/frigid. I really appreciated Miss LuPone the actress last night, first time I think I was overwhelmed by seeing The Star. But this time I noticed her overall contribution and on a Tuesday night in February she gave it everything. It was a good audience and yes a little less hyped up than the preview. The preshow announcement re mobiles may be a litmus test. First time half the audience went wild for this, last night there were a few laughs. I thought the audience had a stronger female bias than normal. And a high percentage of red heads too! I will take your advice and plan another return. PS I commented last time on the visual references, but I'm surprised no one is mentioning the huge Alice in Wonderland homages. Is it all a dream? Saw many new things, including that the door numbers on the street are all the same. Doors are another huge reference point. Is she living in Aldous Huxley's brave new world?

In the small room Alice scene she also takes a swig of something, and there is also the cake of course, with miniature 35 balloons. Perhaps it was the dance, gymnastics elements in the subway train that we were a bit resistant to. I like that there is an illusionist credits.....but which exact illusions - lots of clever stuff with set design and concealed door, and getting Richard Fleeshman back in bed was neat, but these, and trick candles, are good staging rather than illusions.

The bottle Bobbie drinks from throughout is a JD bottle (with the branding removed) so whiskey. In the shrunken, small-Alice scene she swings from one of the mini JD bottles, the 50ml sample sort you get in those Christmas boxes, again with the branding removed. Clocked it because I've seen the same bottle on a shelf at my parents place.

Oh yeah the number 35 is everywhere, it's also on the sweatshirt that David Seadon-Young wears in the bench scene and on Michael Colbourne's tank top in "Another Hundred People".

They do feel like intruders suddenly. I think this is very much it. The song suddenly introduces us to a whole whost of new people who’s stories we are trying to follow through dance. It takes us out of Bobbies world that we have known for the last 50 minutes and kinda stops the pace of the show. I personally don’t think it is the actors fault. Regardless of who was playing that part I don’t think the staging would have worked. It’s a nice idea on paper but in reality trying to follow stories through contemporary dance in two tiny box’s while trying to pay attention to the song lyrics (which are important in this song) and what is going on with the characters we already know is just too much. I have seen the show twice and this is the only part of the show I found messy.
