On the whole, I find Sondheim can be very satisfying when performed by actors who can sing adequately rather than singers who can act adequately. There are, of course, roles within his shows that really do need great singing to cope with the score. But it has always been about the marriage of his words and music where the magic lies - and actors who can sing have always thrilled me more in Sondheim shows. Judi Dench is no great vocalist but her Send in the Clowns is heartbreakingly wonderful.
It is, and she was spectacularly good, but of course the role of Desirée was written specifically for an actress with a limited singing voice and a very narrow vocal range. It's not the same thing - at all - as casting a Bobby in 'Company' who doesn't have quite enough voice to sock the climax of 'Being Alive' across the footlights. My recollection of Lester's performance is that in that moment, his vocal limitations compromised his acting, because his relatively weak singing voice meant he was forced to bellow the big notes at the end of the song, which meant there was no room for any kind of subtlety at all. That's as opposed to, for example, Daniel Evans when he played the role in Sheffield a few years ago - his voice is strong enough that the effort of simply producing those big notes at the end of the song did not override everything else.

Any gossip on day seats/discounts? Have a date that a friend is coming down but £80 on any unrestricted non-upper circle seat seems a lot - have first rows been sold? Potentially being in the splash zone for Patti's martini does seem appealing...

Just bought a ticket for Halloween, row F in the stalls. 80 pounds, but what the hell, it's Patti*! Row B or C seemed too close considering the stage is high.
*let's hope she's on that night. I'm taking the risk.

I see La LuPone is getting equal star billing above the title with Rosalie Craig on some of the posters now which is as it should be. Mel Giedroyc and especially dear Jonny B get special mention under the title which is most exciting and quite right too. It's like I've done their marketing for them.
No-one else in the cast does. Not even The Fleeshman but then I can't imagine they want to be seen advertising guns in London's glitzy West End at this moment in time.

Are those three panels in the middle new electronic screens like the Prince Edward? I don’t recall noticing them before. Love the new NYC themed poster too.

They don't look electronic imo but that would be really cool if they were. I'm not a fan of the Prince Edward/Dominion screens but those panels could look very classy.

Interview followed by Q&A. Perhaps @ryan could go and ask a few questions about ALW and taking photos. That would be worth £10 of anyone’s money.

On closer inspection (ie Instagram stalking) those boards look just like light up static ones not screens. Set build starts today too!

I shall take my own tape measure just to be sure.

@ryan, I've often helped wardrobe mistresses while doing local amdram, I should like to volunteer to carry the tape measure and write all the measurements down for you.

I was a dresser for a time, opera singers darling not nearly so much fun, BUT I do know that three pairs of hands are better than two in a quick change, and he will need a quick change. So I volunteer too.

Just a quick question before purchasing tickets for Company. I have been offered seats in Row B of the stalls for £79.50. I initially thought this was good, but then noticed that they are not classed as Premium Tickets and are, in fact, less expensive than stalls seats further back. Does the Geilgud Theatre have a high stage and this is why the first few rows are cheaper? I haven’t purchased these seats yet, so any advice about sight lines in the front stalls at this theatre would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does anyone know who runs the social media campaign for Company? I might actually think it's the best social media campaign for a musical I've ever followed.
