Love, love love this.
Also shout out to the person on twitter who said a local am dram company did it and it didn't work.
Lads Sondheim has re-written it and Marianne Elliott is directing. I think it's in with a chance.

This is fantastic news! Both amazing performers, and I'm so glad that they've found a way to build in some non-straight characters given that attempts to do a production with Bobby as a gay man have all been vetoed. In the article linked by the official twitter account, it seems that Sondheim is genuinely excited by this and Jonny Bailey makes some very good points about why making Amy/Jamie the gay man rather than Bobby will work so well. The full cast, including understudies, is now up on the Elliott and Harper website: elliottandharper.com/production/company/

Now far be it from me to pick holes in a production that has so many hot-to-trot hotties including future Mr Ryan, Jonny B AND La LuPone but for something that's set in New York now, doesn't it all seem a little bit too . . . white?

Very good point @ryan
Not that I am condoning it but perhaps an all white cast is factually accurate based on how poorly people can intergrate
Plus in the original script is line about how Bobby has no friends frompuerto Rica. Sam Mendes got round this easily in the Donmar Version

Not that I am condoning it but perhaps an all white cast is factually accurate based on how poorly people can intergrate Ashley Campbell and Jennifer Saayeng are both black, I’m not saying that that’s enough racial diversity, not by a long shot! But it’s not an ALL-white cast to be fair. Also really happy about the gay couple!

Interesting tweet from Mark Shenton...…..Mark Shenton Retweeted COMPANY 🎈 Interesting observation on @companywestend: the show may have a female Bobbi -- but the number of female characters has reduced from eight to five - and the male characters increased from six to nine.
Mmmmmmm?

Don’t know the narrative to be able to make an assertive comment, but isn’t it the quality versus quantity argument with better dramatic material being better than more female (but less interesting) characters.

Mmmmmmm? I was thinking about this yesterday, I didn't have the numbers but I had the impression men outnumbered women. Despite being the protagonist, Robert is somehow the least interesting of all the characters, but since they didn't want Bobbie to be queer the only think they could do was filling the stage with men, I guess. Hopefully the changes in the writing and the direction will give some shape and meaning to all the changes in the plot, especially if Elliott doesn't get too gimmicky.

Yes the character of Bobby has always been the least well drawn of the characters in Company and the character (despite being played by some phenomenal and charismatic actors over the years - most recently Adrian Lester) has always vaguely annoyed me for reasons I could never put my finger on. Hence I thought Bobby might have been a closeted gay man for a time, but Sondheim has vigorously denied this interpretation.

When is this production set? I assume not 1970 (when the show premiered), an era when gay marriage didn't exist thereby rendering Alex and Jonny's nuptials an impossibility.

I thought I read something that said it's set in New York now.

Although good old fashioned sexists could argue that originally Company was too female heavy

There’s a quote from Elliott somewhere about Bobbi would defiantly have gay friends like these or words to that effect as well (if I find it again I’ll link it)

It's probably too soon, but do we know if Patti has scheduled days off? I'll be in London from 30th Oct to 3rd Nov.

Worrying tweet about Company from Baz: Bobbi baby ... Angel:@rosiemae says the @_elliottharper @companywestend is “about a woman having a really good time ... Sex & the City style.” #Sondheim has been busy gender changing a lot of his lyrics.Pic by jo _davidson @langham_London Sorry abut Company shouldn't be about a woman having a really good time. That is so far from the original as for it not to count as Company at all. Being Alive is not a song sung by someone having a really good time. It is about having fought your need for companionship and lost.

It's... weird that you think those things are mutually exclusive. Nearly as weird as people spending months in this thread banging on about how terrible it's definitely going to be withhout actually having seen it.

Seriously, with Patti, Jonny B and The Hotties all there, they could have turned 'Company' into 'We Will Rock You' and I wouldn't care a jot.

Adrian Lester as Bobby spent the evening drinking spirits, smoking pot, taking coke, visiting friends, clubbing and dating woman. All activities associated with having a good time it was clear he wasn’t having a good time but he was going through the motions, just like all Bobby’s do
Yet another night when Baz has no news
