Billy Bigelow is the male lead - a large role. He has a huge "Soliloquy" song at the end of Act One, and also sings "If I loved You". Lots of emotional acting required too!!!!

I've wanted to see Carousel for a long while now, but I just don't like Alfie Boe's voice. How big is his part? (Now now!) Katherine Jenkins I can bear. Ummm, he's kind of the male lead so . . .

Bugger - would have loved to hear this in the coliseum, but I've never actually heard words that I can understand whenever Katherine Jenkins sings. What a wasted opportunity...

I wonder who they will cast as Nettie who of course has the big number "You'll never walk alone". Does Katherine realise she does not get to sing it? Will she demand she does? Maybe they'll roll Garrett out. I was supposed to see her in it the last time Carousel toured but on the Monday evening in question she was "indisposed". Mondays performances on a tour are always tricky when you've important things to do in London aren't they. I'm sure she'd bother to turn up st the Coliseum though

Not a huge fan of the artwork, either.

Semi staged then. Don't be expecting a Carousel!

As far as I can see, Katherine Jenkins has never played a full role in a professional staged production. Ignoring the massive flaws in her vocal technique, she just doesn't have the background to pull this off. Julie is an immensely challenging role to get right. It is not just a matter of standing there and looking blonde.
ENO have made a massive mistake. They might sell seats - but they have lost a lot of credibility which is more damaging long term.
Boe is also totally wrong for Billy. His mannerisms and limited acting range just won't work for such a tricky anti-hero.

It is not just a matter of standing there and looking blonde. I LOVE this I agree though, they seem to simply go for a "pretty" version for the masses with recognizable stars and famous tunes. It's a relief though as it means worrying about one show less next year.

ENO are not producing this. Michael Linnit and Michael Grade are, just as they did Sweeney and Sunset.

I'm still not over how ridiculous the casting of Boe is. Billy should be threatening and sexy, a Marlon Brando type... Boe is like a younger Santa Claus and he's just a boring performer

Even if offered free tickets, I would turn them down. This sort of thing should not be encouraged.

I suppose it could be much more a "concert" type performance rather than "semi staged" like Sunset. If so, I suppose (desperately trying to be positive)they could argue it's not a realistic treatment/staging.

To my mind that would need the acting to be even stronger - to make up for the lack of other theatricality. I just can't see a way of spinning this stunt

I am so gutted. I absolutely adore Carousel but I cannot see how anyone can think that Alfie Boe could be Billy Bigelow. It is truly beyond me. I won't even start on KJ. What a disappointment.

For those who want to go but would rather not see Katherine Jenkins, ENO website says KJ is not scheduled to appear on Tuesday 18 April.

Haha. Imagine if that was the only one to sell out to begin with. If someone could arrange for Mr Boe to have food-poisoning that night then I'd book.

Can we get rid of Alfie that night too? Add me to the wave of people saying they've been put off by this casting. I was so looking forward to hearing Carousel from that glorious orchestra too.

I'm surprised ENO pulled such a Kenwright on us all. I hate to sound snobbish, but this really taints their character.

Spookily enough my brother is on Radio 2 conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra in Friday Night Is Music Night with Wayne Sleep and they are playing the Carousel Waltz.

It might actually be hilarious watching Katherine Jenkins trying to act.. and Creature Comforts attempting Soliloquey , that I may actually book a cheap seat
