Not buying Imelda at all. Sorry! I keep expecting her to launch into Some People.
Diana though.. my god that actor has got her down to an absolute tee. The voice, the mannerisms, the body language. Insanely accurate.

Dominic West is flattering casting as Charles.
As much as he does have Charles’ mannerisms and some of his particular vocal tics down, there’s no getting away from the strength of his own physical presence and charisma, which Charles notably lacks.
I am not at all sure about Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, either.
Rather enjoying Johnny Lee Miller as Major. He’s not quite right, of course - too boyish in the face - but nevertheless I am enjoying his performance.
I’m up to episode 5, and so far it’s really quite sympathetic to Charles and Camilla with The Queen and Philip coming across less well. The Mou Mou episode really does make them look bad.
I’d forgotten that the Fayeds were involved in Chariots of Fire.

I’m ten minutes in and though loving the period detail, I’m a little bored. Ten minutes is usually all we give a new programme in our house.

The thing about The Crown is that I've always found the episodes about the lesser-known stories behind the monarchy much more interesting. In the new season, I just watched the episode about the connection to the Romanovs of Russia and found it fascinating.
The episodes focusing on Charles and Diana are simply dramatising a story that we already know and has been documented extensively over the years. It isn't as interesting to me as most of the other storylines.

Joy of earlier seasons especially 1 - 3 was that a I didn’t know practically any of the history, or the prime ministers or anything like that. Had quite a fun time myself with Wilson and decided he would be my favourite. Once we hit Maggie and Di it was a world I knew very well.

I am glad that they don't shy away from showing Bashir for the lying fraudster that he is.
Marcia Warren is very cartoon casting for the Queen Mother. So wrong. And Anne has morphed into Duck Face from Four Weddings.

Yes they didn’t pull their punches with Bashir!
Anne’s never had enough screen time in the series. I still can’t believe they didn’t dramatise the kidnap attempt.

Apart from the Queen Mother, another example of a part in The Crown being miscast and underwritten was Prince Edward. I only realised who the actor was meant to be by a process of elimination.

Watched the second half of the series, I guess it was a decade dominated by Diana and Charles. I love the break out episodes like Aberfan, and the Romanov's episode was equally good. The strong music with deep thinking characters interspersed by dramatised scenes are very good. It felt like the last three episodes were packed with them.
Really enjoyed another series. Superbly written with some great acting

Another couple of points from watching:
I do always find it ironic when I watch the series that the Queen is so opposed to divorce as head of the Church of England, when in fact really the Church of England was only founded so that a divorce could take place.
Also, did anyone else find the murders of the Romanovs a little TOO harrowing? I really didn't need to see the actual killing take place. It didn't fit the tone of the rest of the series at all. They could have cut away when the sentencing was read.

Henry VIII was a raging hypocrite. Divorce for him, but not anyone else!

That would have been an interesting one! Those of us on here who have seen Erin Doherty's stage work knew she was going to be amazing in the role, and I think the programme makers regretted giving her so little to do first time round. There were some really slow episodes that series, the horse and space rockets ones particularly - why not do the kidnap?

They could have cut away when the sentencing was read. I feel the same about the CoE. Their stance on divorce was the height of hypocrisy, but even now there are still people who are quite vocal that marriage is for life, that divorce is wrong, and I say why force people to be miserable together when these days most live so much longer than our ancestors?
I could have done without the firing squad scene as well. I ended up having to look away, although if anyone has read Robert K Massie's "Nicholas and Alexandra," there are some pretty brutal descriptions about what the Bolsheviks really did to the remains.
For some reason, I started thinking of "The Lost Prince" on the BBC featuring Gina McKee as Prince John's nanna Lala. There was a sweet scene when the young prince imagined the Romanovs coming to live with him at his cottage away from court. The monarchy has people who are determined to survive at any cost, but it's sad what happened to the Romanov children, along with Prince John, being kept out of sight for most likely being on the spectrum.

I had to stop watching the Romanov episode periodically, it was just brutal.

No spoilers, but clearly little happening to the Royals early naughties hence cutting short the 90's!
Latest season was terrific, Diana superb, Queen a little older looking I thought but so much better than previous Oliva Colemans take - didnt enjoy that season like I thought i would.
I believe it, in the sense we get what the tabloids tell us at the time, in that way, yes buy into it. But nother beats Season 1 and to some extent season 2.
'orrible lot though.

I expect I'll watch it but it does seem that the creatives might have messed this one up given it gets 1* in the Guardian, 2* in the Telegraph but does manage 4* in the Times - not that it reads like a 4* review and the reviewer even summarises by saying "Deciding a star rating is difficult, because while some “imaginings” are gauche, most performances here are excellent. The question is, is it a compelling piece of television with very high production values that makes you want to see more? The answer is yes."
So I'll watch it just to make up my own mind. It sounds like it will be schlocky enough to get me through the dark nights of November and the dark days of December.

I was surprised how boring they made the 90s last series. So much happened during that period yet somehow they didn't capture it. There was also so much untapped material with Andrew and Fergie. Still can't believe they didn't include Anne's kidnapping, such important character development. Maybe Charles and Diana should have been a spin off series.
And this first part of the final series is similarly flat, although the final episode is well handled. Possibly better than The Queen

I've watched 3 episodes of the latest series and, so far, it's more of a drama about Diana, as was much of the series before. Now I mean this in the nicest way but pleased she has died in episode 3 so that after her funeral they can concentrate on the rest of the royals and especially the Queen. The Diana episodes could almost be a series in itself. Looking forward to the rest when released.

We have just watched all 4 and really don't get the negative critic reaction to it
It does dwell on Diana. But she was central to the family at that period.
I didn't see a drop off in script quality. The production values are as high as ever.
Yes we have seen this with The Queen. But there was enough new material to justify revisiting it.
