What a trooper for carrying on. Pretty much the worst time to get an injury when the press are coming in to review. Hope he recovers swiftly and is able to open the show.

Today's Saturday matinee canceled. Understudy will go on in the evening. They've probably canceled to rehears him. No pressure.

If Karl can't go on on Monday they will postpone the opening, surely. The Tony rules are such that, if he doesn't perform on opening night, then he can't be nominated and thus it would rob the show of a potential win. They would need to reschedule for a date up to 27th April (the cut off date for this year's awards), which should be enough time for him to recover, but the role is physical enough that a knee injury may keep him out for a while.
The relevant rule -
"In order to be eligible, an actor or actress must perform in the role on the production’s opening night and must perform in the minimum number of performances to which the producer of such production must invite and make tickets available to Tony voters as required by Rule 2(a)vi). "

" Oh dear. The Broadway production seems to have had pretty naff luck with the first preview (I know it turned out to be a good alternative, but still) and now this. I hope Andy will recover in time for Monday or whenever delay the opening night to, he so deserves a Tony nomination - if not, WIN - for this role! As for the trailer - it looks so good! They really do make the guy in the groundhog suit look like the villain! As I said for the production photos, I still do think the lighting looks darker than from what was at the Old Vic.

I feel sorry for the understudy. That's a hell of a role to have to tackle at very short notice, especially as the understudy rehearsals have probably not even started yet, assuming that Broadway is like the West End in not doing understudy rehearsals till after opening.

Learning lines and the role itself is one thing, but most understudies are not rehearsed on the stage, or have a put in rehearsal until after the opening night simply because rehearsals for the main cast take priority as they are the ones who 9 times out of 10 are the ones that are on (or at least that is how most cast members are expected to think).

A similar situation happened with Hello Dolly! a couple weeks ago. Gavin Creel was out sick and his understudy, Christian Dante White, had to go on without having had a put-in rehearsal. He pulled it off so well that Bette actually gave him the final bow. www.playbill.com/article/bette-midler-gives-final-bow-in-hello-dolly-to-understudy-christian-dante-whiteAccording to that Playbill article, put-in rehearsals for understudies are typically not done until after opening night.

For people that have seen it on Broadway and West End what was wrong with the original Rita?/ Why was the casting changed? also I loved Matilda for its smart writing is the writing smart here?

There was nothing wrong with her. Only Andy Karl transferred with the production, I expect because he's American anyway and a Broadway 'name'.
And yes, the show was very witty, and quitedark at times.

Having been an understudy in two major musicals I can tell you that the second you get cast you have a note book and are staring at the rehearsals and making frantic notes and learning your part from day one. Even if you aren't blocked yourself at the back of your mind you think "what will happen if xxxx is off sick during previews? I've known the role in my head (imagining set, costume changes, prop lists, wing entrances/exits, sight lines, directing notes, staging and any tech notes) without even being rehearsed as the understudy. I'd have a book full by the end of week one/two. Sure it's nervous to be thrown on but you kinda expect it. Plus for many understudies it's not the first time to cover a role.

Going on without rehearsals on a static stage with not much flying or moving scenery? Okay.
Going on without rehearsals on a stage with five turntables and moving scenery on and off constantly from all directions? Not okay.

I was also thinking of the repetative nature of this show which must make it very easy to get lost. When I saw Matthew Malthouse in Annie Get Your Gun in January I was chatting to him about Groundhog Day afterwards & he said people were sometimes muttering to each other on stage things like "Are we in Day 2 or Day 3?" so evidently it's hard to keep track even after rehearsals & weeks of doing the show.

Is the full cast recording available on iTunes already? Last time I checked only two tracks were available. Not until this Friday (21st April). Those two tracks "If I Had My Time Again" and "Seeing You" are just premature releases ("Hope" is as well, but only on Amazon Music with the other two - and all three can be heard on Spotify).

Note: It's not just "the understudy." There are two, and it's very rare that any show on Broadway has just one understudy for a lead role. Andrew Call is the one who's gone on so far for Andy, though.

^ Right. It's a bit different on Broadway than London. London has two understudies too, but there's usually a hierarchy in the West End when it comes to covers, where there's a "first understudy" and a "second understudy", but on Broadway roughly there's no such thing and it's up to the company manager to pick who goes on.
