anthony40 I think you're thinking of the play "Good People" in-between Sweeney and Follies. Yeah, maybe. Ooops! But it doesn't negate the fact that she's a busy lady!

Tracie meanwhile started on her morning wine at about 11pm the night before. I am Tracie. We are all Tracie.

Very late to the party but finally booked tickets to see this in March! I missed it last time and have never seen it, really excited now!

Was she that bad? I mean I much preferred the glamour and humour Elaine Paige brought to the role, as well as the vocals (not that she could remember the words when I saw her). But I wouldn't describe Tracie's performance as awful..

Well she got an Olivier nomination for the role and lots of praise in the reviews and on this board for her performance so I'd say it was generally well received.
Personally I thought she'd nailed it.

Tracie's rendition seems really laboured to me. I've never been able to put my finger on what exactly I don't like about it, but 'laboured' pretty much sums it up. There's something about the phrasing I don't like.
Carol Burnett's version with the New York Philharmonic sets the bar for me...

Bennett's version is the only one (and first) I've seen live - but it looks like Elaine Stritch and Ann Miller get mentioned a lot as people who've set the bar. Stritch particularly.

Eartha Kitt did a fabulous OTT version in the London production at The Shaftesbury Theatre !!! THE QUEEN HERSELF. Funnily enough the first thing I thought when I saw Tracie Bennett as Carlotta was, "If they ever make an Emperor's New Groove musical, here's your Yzma..."

Stritch famously said before her White House performance of it that you shouldn't be allowed to sing it before you are 80. She then proceeded to forget the words multiple times reminding everyone why it was necessary for younger women to sing it! Her version IS incredible though...
As ever with Sondheim for me, the holy grail is a performer who can nail the acting AND the singing. Whilst Stritch certainly acted the hell out of it, I think Burnett both acted and sang it wonderfully.

Didn't Shirley McLaine do a version of it in the film Postcards from the edge? Or was it Debbie Reynolds or have I got completely the wrong film?

It was Shirley MacLaine, and Sondheim rewrote a few of the lyrics for her ("I'm feeling transcendental. Am I here?")

According to Graham Norton radio interview with the cast, I'm Still Here has been re-choreographed

Did they actually say it's been re-choreographed? Tracie was hilarious pointing out that she is singing I'm Still Here as written by Sondheim, not taking liberties as some have done in past productions or in concert. And anyone who doesn't like it can piss right off. (Not her actual turn of phrase, but what was implied. Do you think she might have read this thread!)

Stritch's rendition of I'm Still Here at Sondheim's Birthday concert in 2010 is always the best!
