It's much harder to do 8 shows a week on the road when you're in digs here, there and everywhere without your home comforts, family, friends, pets etc around you.

The tour also has soooo many press events to partake in! I remember seeing NDJ everywhere when she became the tour lead! She was on regional news, Blue Peter, Irish TV (then back to Manchester to perform) then she was all over YouTube doing interviews! I know vocal rest is a big part of the role so having to do so many interviews and performances is bound to take a toll!
Same can be said for Jackie with this too, she was always on YouTube doing interviews and performed on Singapore TV!

Ok ok, you all make compelling arguments about the difference between tour & London/Broadway!
Maybe it's not such a bad idea....

Really wish I could have seen this fake cast picture. Is it still doing the rounds anywhere?

Really wish I could have seen this fake cast picture. Is it still doing the rounds anywhere? tried to save it but couldn't, I should've taken a screenshot. There were 4, all taken from the wings - glinda in her bubble, Glinda and students in Shiz scene, end of DTL when Elphaba, Glinda and Fiyero are in the middle of all the students, and an incredible DG shot. Unsure why they took them down as it was very hard to make out any faces.....

Ok ok, you all make compelling arguments about the difference between tour & London/Broadway! Maybe it's not such a bad idea.... May I ask why you were initially so against the idea of there being an alternate? Elphaba is one of the hardest vocal roles in musical theatre, both male and female being included. Doing eight shows a week, I think, is totally crazy. Having an alternate isn't admitting that the performer isn't capable of handling the role, in fact I think it's them being quite smart. If they are only performing six times a week, it is making sure that those six performances are of a higher quality (and of course ensures that the performer doesn't work themselves to breaking point). I'd much rather see a lead in good health with an alternate, than a lead in bad health who can say they perform at every show.

Is Elphaba really one of the hardest vocal roles for a female in theatre? I get it is abit of a tough sing, but she really only sings three big solos, and most actresses who sing the role make it difficult for themselves by adding in these rediculous riffs and belts when it isn't needed (sometimes, when it doesn't fit into the score!). The rest of the songs she sings are not exceeding a general musical actress' vocal abilities. Its tough, yes, but the hardest, I'm not so sure?

isn't Christine way harder? It's a bit of a cheat really - if the full score was sung live at every performance, yes it would be incredibly taxing for an actress' voice. However, one of the most technically challenging songs (the title number) is mostly pre-recorded, so the actress playing Christine doesn't actually have to sing it during performances. Obviously she still has to be able to sing the full score so that it can be recorded, and there are other challenging songs for Christine that do have to be sung live at every show, but nothing that goes abnormally high for an MT soprano so the role is probably not much more vocally taxing than any other leading lady in the West End - probably on a par with the big belters like Elphaba/Effie White. Definitely the most challenging legit soprano role though. *Disclaimer: I'm not an expert in the female voice, what I've said above is drawn from my experience as a singer/performer and my knowledge of Musical Theatre scores.

Also not forgetting roles like Lovett and Norma Desmond too of course, and Lily Garland in On the Twentieth Century!

I'd much rather see a lead in good health with an alternate, than a lead in bad health who can say they perform at every show. As a principle I'm still against the idea of an Alternate, but I accept the other view that tour Elphaba's in the UK haven't come out of it very well after not having one... so I can see the reason for tour why you would take that option. But worldwide there are actresses who typically nail 8 shows a week, they're at the top of their game and have the physical and mental stamina to perform such a demanding role. Employing someone on 6 shows a week and someone else on 2 or heaven forbid 5/3, 4/4 etc just feels like you'd be acknowledging the person recruited wasn't up to the job when many many actresses have gone before and done it. If you employ the right actress you don't need an Alternate, but I do accept the pressures of constantly changing venue being different to an actress who plays on Broadway/West End.

I think it will be this Friday now. What’s with all the suggestions of it being Friday? The last London cast announcement was made on a Thursday

Historically they've usually been on Fridays but times have changed. Shows never really release their own casting news anymore. It's usually done via an "exclusive" through What's on Stage or similar.

I hope we get another weird, glossy video to introduce the two leads ala Alice and Sophie.

Never been done before, not even for the 10th anniversary cast! 🤔 Exactly, it was so random! And, no disrespect to the girls, not a surprising casting or any form of celeb casting or anyhting particularly exciting that screamed out "lets make an exciting, new annoucement video!". I'll be intrigued to see if this is a new thing we will see happen in future or if just, for some weird reason, they chose to do it for just those two?

As they had a shoot the other day expect more of the same...
Is it just me who can't even be bothered to watch these things? I haven't even watched the "new cast press night video" yet as no doubt it's just random z listers saying what a "Wicked time" they'd had.

Not to speculate but ...
On this day last year it was announced Willemijn would be returning, and 6 years ago on this day it was announced Gina Beck/Matt Willis & co would be joining! 👍🏼

Would the full cast have not already been selected by the time Aaron Sidwell had been leaked as the new Fiyero? I can't see any other reason why they would delay the rest of the release

As far as I was aware this was fully cast in June, so why they have delayed releasing it I have no idea. Presume they feel releasing it late works best for them in terms of ticket sales? No idea though.
