Theatre always gets dropped for a bit of well paid telly work.

But Brief Encounters has been axed...?! andwas filmed last year, wouldn't stop her doing the show...? I prefer Natalie Casey anyway but seems a weird excuse

Maybe she thought she was in for the second series, and then when they axed it was too late for her to get back into Stepping Out?
Karma?

Saw this last night and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Ground breaking piece of theatre? No. But it is a nice comedy. It's very much an ensemble piece and I agree with some of the tabloid reviews that the characters aren't really developed because there's so many but you do get enough to keep your interest. I was pleasantly surprised with Amanda Holden's performance, I really did think she did an excellent job and got a lot of laughs. There really wasn't a weak link in the cast. I think it'll do well for the shall we say mature market and I think that's reflected in the 2 midweek matinee's a week set up. First act felt very short, finished just before 8.20pm but the second act felt much tighter and was a lot more fun, especially with the final dancing at the end. Enjoyed the 80s theming and the 80s tunes played prior to starting. Overall a great light fun evening.

Thank you.
I might have to do the cheaper seats in the circle then!

It seems to be regularly at TKTS at around 40-50% off for about £35 for stalls and dress circle. Even Fridays and Saturdays although seats may be better allocated in the early part of the week.

Saw the matinee on Saturday. I think I would best describe it as a warm and cuddly kind of show. Well acted by all the cast. Yes, Amanda Holden was clearly the one most of the audience wanted to see, but everyone has a story to tell and I thought it was a good production, keeping itself firmly in the 80s. Stand out person for me was Anny-Jane Casey. For me this is ultimately a dark comedy rather than something that was designed to be a laugh a minute. Back in 1984 some of the subject matter might have seen more comedic. In the present day the audience possibly sees and hears it differently. When Vera talks about the time her older husband spends with their young daughter, the audience immediately reacted seeing this as some form of possible grooming. Back in 1984 grooming was a reference for Bee Gee haircuts.
Theatre almost full for matinee. Like the cast the men in the audience were very much in the minority. On the plus side it meant we didn't have to queue for the loos!

Saw this this evening and with my extended bout of Winter blues (April? STILL!? Thanks!) this really hit the spot. Silly, tap dancing and confetti cannon!
Rolled up at 5.10pm and got a premium seat in the stalls for £20! That lass that's off with the dickie foot? She ain't coming back

That lass that's off with the dickie foot? She ain't coming back This really is begging to be a song title!
[Now for someone to point out it already is - in a failed show that ran for 4 nights in Blackpool in 1963]

Richard Harris adapted his own 1984 play (which is now revived at the Vaudeville) into a musical in the 90s (music by Denis King) and it had a brief stint at the Albery (now Noel Coward) in 1997 with SDC in it. I think Elaine Paige played a song from it on yesterday's show.
Also, for those that are interested, Josefina Gabrielle has taken over from Anna Jane Casey in this.

For some mysterious reason (though maybe less so given the comments above about a musical version) I expect this to be under "Musicals" and have looked there several times in vain. How can a show about a dance class not involve music, my brain must be thinking? Still keen to see this but have seen some amazing offers for performances I couldn't attend so am hoping for something similar to recur when I can.

And the music doesn't push the story forward. If they stripped it of all music, whilst being a bit odd it wouldn't really change things

There was a musical version, which closed very, very quickly. Shame, as the CD isn't bad. ah ha! I thought I was imagining that one...either that or we are somehow sharing the same delusions (folie a deux and all that...)

Well. I laughed at Amanda Holden. I feel dirty.
Other than that it's a fun little show. And it features two of my favourite things. A tap routine and a glitter cannon. Every show should have them. It would have livened up Hedda Gabler.
My only issue is that the characters stories didn't seem fleshed out and weren't explored enough. It just seemed to start to get going and then they moved to the end number. Tracy-Ann Oberman was my favourite but also thought Dominic Rowan gave a delightful performance.
But I do love a tap number.

Going to see this next week, got a stalls ticket from Theatrepeople.com for £12.50 - only row O, but if I'm not impressed it's not too far from the exit for me to sneak out.

^The same offer is available with us here, too at theatreboard.entstix.com for those interested. I am - my cousin really wants to see it, but the talk of unisex toilets has put me off.

Really enjoyed the matinee of this today and thought it well worth the wait. Must be punishing for the cast to have 3 double-show days per week (matinees now Wed/Thurs/Sat), but it's obviously finding an audience at those times and went down very well. I'll probably have a stiff neck from sitting in the front row (unlike some reports I'd say the stage was high for this production and there's almost no space between it and the front row, which increases the angle at which you have to look up), but for £13 (using a Todaytix code) it was a bargain.
