Mary Poppins - Feed the birds
There are probably so many more that make me weep when I've watched the shows but there the ones that spring to mind. The ones from Hamilton and Into the Woods can make me cry at any point though rather than getting swept away in the theatre moment.

Mine are: Quiet Uptown and Who Lives, Who Dies... from Hamilton - have to skip them when they are shuffling and I am in the tube, otherwise people start suggesting me tissues Falling Slowly (Reprise) - Once - makes me a total mess I'll Cover You reprise - Rent - heartbreaking!!! Sleeping - Once (this is personal, but the line about "all that you've ever owned is packed in the hall to go" turns me into a sobbing mess Alabanza and Everything I know - In the Heights - obviously and Blackout and Sunrise from Heights - because of them being so beautiful No One But You - We Will Rock You For Good - Wicked - these two work in context. when seen live and with proper backstory behind them When I Grow Up - Matilda - no idea how Minchin did that, but this song just presses the CRY button in me both Letters in Billy Elliot are made for crying Fine Fine Line - Avenue Q - I guess, almost everyone has such a story, works as a self-pitying moment for me Climb Every Mountain - Sound of Music - one of the best shows I worked for, so many good memories! Twelve Children - Dessa Rose - one of the saddest song I ever heard Boys of 41 - From Here To Eternity - all the WWII stories are to hard for me to live through Memphis Lives In Me - depending on who it sings, in that case. It has to be a proper-told story ...and I guess half a million more. Looks like I'm only crying in the theatres!  |

I've always found 'If Only' from 'Whistle Down The Wind' desperately sad; "if only it was so, these are the loneliest words I know". That coupled with the fact that it's one of the most gorgeous melodies in the ALW cannon. I think it stands as a terrific song away from the context of the musical too, whereas I think a lot of sad songs only fit when seen as part of the show.

I'm not Phantom's biggest phan, and it's not a song as much as a line in the show, but the Phantom's defeated, desperate and lonely "Christine....I love you" right at the end of the show really seems to do something to me that hits me right in the heart.

Not because of the context of the song in the show, but because my sister sang it to my cat as he was being taken to the vet to be put down. Now I can't hear it without bringing that pain back.

I love the line, "He was never mine to lose..." sung by Eponine in Les Miserables, as she watches Marius, the object of her affections, with someone else. So, so sad. And then it's repeated almost by Valjean later on as he watches his beloved "daughter" Cosette slipping away from him to Marius. "She was never mine to keep..."

Cheer Up Charlie - Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (Film)
Feed The Birds - Mary Poppins
Out There - Hunchback Of Notre Dame (particularly the beginning, when Frollo is telling Quasimodo that he's his only friend and that he's deformed and ugly - heartbreaking, especially when Quasimodo softly repeats what Frollo is telling him. Tom Hulce really does act with his voice in that film, as does the actor who plays Frollo.)

When I Grow Up - Matilda - no idea how Minchin did that, but this song just presses the CRY button in me Agreed! There's an interview with Matthew Warchus where he says they weren't sure Tim M could bring the full range of emotions to Matilda, until they saw him sing White Wine in the Sun as an encore and the whole audience snivelled. Wistful Minchin is clever stuff. And of course we've all been discussing Playing Nancy, which is similarly off piste. I would add Someone Else's Story from Chess and Thank Goodness from Wicked to the lists: the former regardless of context and the latter when done well within the show. |
