It's a hard one - I know it looks 'budget' or whatever term you like, but it really didn't look or feel cheap at all when you're there. I thought they balanced that line very well. Sitting on the front row, the many, many front cloths and back cloths used were some of the most exquisitely painted/made I've ever seen and surely that can't have been that cheap? Or could it? And I wonder what the likes of Lesley and Ross are on a week, too. Not in relation to Beyoncé. Really didn't think that would need explaining! And appearing in the original London cast playing iconic film roles in a Mel Brooks musical getting to work with Brooks himself (and Susan Stroman) seems pretty damn cool for actors like them. Even at The Garrick! I don't think either of them would ever claim to be 'big time' and, if you read their interviews, this project seems to be a passion for them.

It's a big musical in a modest sized theatre, typically reserved for plays. The weekly breakeven must be tight. It’s a small musical Cast of less than 20 I think In a small theatre There is nothing big about this show It would have worked better in The Menier I think Although it is diverting I can’t remember a single song from the show They all sound the same Granted. 21 in the cast + how many in the band? It's not 42nd Street, but it's in a 700-seater theatre.

Delighted to hear that parsley loved it and can't wait to go back and see it again. As a token of my appreciation, here's Studly Fraser at the opening night. It's opening niiiiiiiight! It's Max Bialystock's latest show. Will it flop or will it go? . . . Some other people were there including Lesley Joseph in a nicely understated outfit. Don't know who Rosalie Craig thinks she is with her hands all over Studly . . .

The costs may be higher than we think. Royalties for Mel Brooks? Being in a relatively small theatre for a musical means high prices throughout I suppose. If you're in a big theatre like Drury Lane there is always scope for £25 tickets, but at the Garrick revenue will have to maximised.

Why do they need to change the 'criminal' prices if the theatre was full and the reaction was fantastic? Surely a full theatre means that most of the almost 800 people there weren't put off by price (if they all paid), and their reaction shows that they felt it was good value for money? ah! you make a good point! I guess was thinking that if it wanted to run for a while surely after initial buzz those prices wouldn't hold up? (thinking fro half A Sixpence where their prices went down)

Thinking out aloud, it's possible that YF it's probably much more of a recognisable 'brand' than, say, HaS was, especially to someone who may not go to the theatre often (I'm pretty sure some of the cast members like Ross & Lesley say it's a musical for people who don't love musicals) and so if word of mouth continues to be this strong, maybe it'll be fine. But if they are financially able to lower ticket prices to keep it open for longer, I'd definitely not argue because I agree with you completely that this deserves to be a huge hit!

I agree with Parsley.. the pricing of this is outrageous- it certainly looks like they haven’t spent lavishly on the production. £59.50 for the upper circle! A scandal. Most cloths are printed now and I highly doubt this production would have paid for them to be painted.

Maybe I'm easily impressed as I don't generally go for shows with special effects/animals etc, but I thought the horses (admittedly only the heads and necks and seen from the rear) in the early hay-wagon scene were amazingly realistic. Later on some nice fireworks and other pyrotechnics, too - and there's even tap-dancing, for those who like that. All in all pretty crowd-pleasing imo.

And that person was right to call out the sexism in it. I' m coming at this from the point of view that I loved the show, but I can totally see how sexist it is. However, given that a) the show is typical of Mel Brooks humour, and b) it is an adaptation of a parody of a 1930s film where the women didn't have much to do other than be hopeless and scream, you can see where it comes from. I think that where this show gets it right is that it is so over the top in as much as everything is a ludicrous parody and stereotype, to me it(almost) becomes a non issue. Personally, had it been presented in any other way I might have had a problem but to be honest the show delivered what I expected.
I said it was almost a non issue - I did genuinely feel uncomfortable with the scene where the monster meets Elizabeth - granted I saw the Newcastle run so I don't know if anything has changed, but I think getting from the start to the end point of that scene could have been handled very differently.

I seem to be one of the few people, if not the only person, to take advantage of it. I did suggest it to one of the producers in the first place!

If it runs longer than 14 months it will have run longer than the Broadway production. Which doesn't seem impossible given the size of the theatre, the reviews and word of mouth going around, as well as the cast. I could esily see this one sticking around until at least this time next year.
